Great Times In Gay Travel To Thailand

By Howie Holben

Be ready for a friendly welcome in the beautiful country of Thailand. The smiling people do not label you for being straight or gay. They really have no concern about either, and they do not care if you are gay or straight. That is why you will find gay vacations to Thailand a very special adventure.

Asian men will be friendly, as they very much want to meet the western man. They know a bit of English, so that they can communicate with you. And it may extend past the hotel room. You will find gay friends and nightclubs readily available to welcome you.

And if you are an aging gay, of either sex, you will be happy to know that the Thai people are not obsessed with you. Middle aged gays and older will find companionship easily. And you can find out about the local gay clubs just by asking around.

Gay establishments, such as go-go clubs and saunas, were largely commercial until just recently. Now there are non-commercial establishments, such as coffee houses and the discos, in the big cities of Thailand. And you will want to enjoy a night at a local go-go boy bar.

But even though gays are quite readily accepted, the kissing and showing of affection in public is considered inappropriate. It is as if you are fine to do it, but not display it or talk about it. This is the same for straight people, as well. As a matter of fact, if two Thai men are holding hands, it is because they are just friends, and they are displaying no sexual affection at all.

There is quite a bit of modesty going on with the Thai people, as they do not display their bodies. Even in a locker room at the gym, men will change clothes using a towel to cover themselves. And in the bedroom, it will likely be the same, until the petting begins. Even then, the sex may be somewhat conservative. So, you should probably discuss your special interests, if you have any, with your new Thai partner.

A lot of bars and night spots have drag shows that star what the Thai people call ladyboys. They are very popular, but usually cater to a straight crowd. In bars where you might find a man to take home for the night, this is a relatively safe practice, as the bars know whom they are hiring.

There are some additional cultural differences you should be aware of. For instance, you are expected to pay for everything. There is no such thing as going dutch. As the western man, you are considered the social superior, as strange as that may sound. Frequent compliments on your part are good. Dressing well, with pressed, long pants, and a dress shirt is respectable and appreciated. And be ready to have your cheeks sniffed, as this is a sign of affection. Sharing clothing, and even your tooth brush could happen, so do not sweat it. Be generous. And you will have the time of your life on your gay travel to Thailand.

Rio De Janerio Wins 2016 Summer Olympic Games

By Ross Everett

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite--including President Barack Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey--Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points. The Brazilian leader stressed the unfairness that South America had never hosted the games in his speech to the committee;

"It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country."

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The'96 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.

US Holidays And Holy Days

By Owen Jones

Congress and the president have designated ten days as federal holidays. Being 'federal', these holidays technically only pertain to federal employees and inhabitants of the District of Columbia, although they are so widely observed that they can be thought of as national holidays.

Officially, it is up to each individual state to designate public holidays. If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before or the Monday after is given in lieu to make a long weekend.

New Year's Day (January 1) - celebrating the New Year dates back to pre-Christian times, when rites were performed to attempt to ensure the return of Spring.

Martin Luther King Jnr. Day (third Monday in January) - before he was shot dead in 1968, Martin Luther King Jnr. was the foremost civil rights leader in the 1950's and 1960's. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Congress set this day aside to celebrate his life and accomplishments in 1983.

Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February) - originally it was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, the 22nd of February, but it was moved in 1971 to make a long weekend. It is occasionally known as Presidents' Day, because it is close to Lincoln's birthday on the 12th February.

Memorial Day (last Monday in May) - also called Decoration Day, it honours soldiers fallen in battle. It originates from the Civil War and is traditionally marked by parades and services.

Independence Day (4th July) - this, the most significant US holiday, marks the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was first celebrated in 1777 and is marked by fireworks, parades and speeches.

Labor Day (first Monday in September) - this, the suggestion of Peter J. McGuire, the president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, was taken up in 1894 to honour American workers.

Columbus Day (second Monday in October) - Christopher Columbus and his crew landed in the Bahamas on Oct 12th 1492. It was first commemorated in 1792, although it was not formally adopted until 1909. It is a source of particular pride to Italian-Americans, who claim the Genoan voyager as their own.

Veterans Day (Nov 11th) - or Armistice Day commemorates the end of the First World War on Nov 11th 1918. It was made a legal holiday in 1938, but its name was changed in 1954 to honour all American veteran soldiers.

Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) - it was first celebrated in Plymouth County, Massachusetts in 1621, the year in which the Pilgrims landed in the New World to give thanks for the new harvest and the new land they had colonized. President Lincoln made it a holiday in 1863.

Christmas Day (December 25th) - Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Easy Pips Daily Fx Trader Update

By Susan Land

Three days worth of U.S. economic data was squeezed into Wednesday's session as Americans head for a long weekend. The results were mixed but the market chose to focus on an unexpected improvement in jobless claims. The Canadian and Australian dollars were the top performers while the yen and euro lagged. Markets cheered after the U.S. employment market showed some of its first signs of improvement this year. The S&P 500 wiped out all of the prior day's losses. Initial jobless claims fell to 407K last week - the lowest since July 2008.

The claims report overshadowed the largest drop in U.S. durable goods orders in 21 months in October. Orders fell 3.3% in the month compared to the +0.1% expected. September's data was revised to from +3.3% to +5.0%. Capital goods orders excluding defense and aircraft fell 4.5% compared to the +1.0% expected. U.S. new home sales were also a disappointment but the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey was revised higher.

The Canadian dollar was the big winner after oil climbed nearly $3 to $84 per barrel. News that Russia may boost its holdings of CAD also had a positive effect.

Ireland's plan to cut its deficit was not well received. Politicians introduced a four-year plan to cut spending by 20% and hike taxes in order to bring the budget deficit under control. Prime Minister Brian Cowen introduced the cuts in order to receive an 85 billion bailout from the EU and IMF. The euro also declined as Portugal prepared for the biggest strikes in 22 years due to government austerity measures.

Asia-Pacific trading was characterized by a bounce in the currencies that were beaten down on Tuesday but much of the price action was reversed in Europe. The market is shifting its focus to Portugal as the next potential euroarea domino to fall. Five-year credit default swaps hit a record 486 basis points as workers there plan the biggest strike in 22 years in response to government austerity measures. The market was also jolted by news that Standard and Poor's lowered Ireland's credit rating to A from AA-. The euro initially climbed to as high as 1.3419 but tumbled to 1.3282 as European traders arrived at their desks.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is under fire after saying yesterday that the euro faces an "exceptionally serious" situation. "That irritates me," European Central Bank Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny told Austria's ORF television yesterday. "The euro is not in danger. Individual countries, and the banking systems of these countries, are in danger. You have to make the distinction." Merkel is also pushing to introduce bailout clauses into euroarea bonds issued as early as 2011 - another reason that has been sighted for the 250 pip drop in EUR/USD on Tuesday. Gold or Food? You Can't Eat Gold

By James Goodenough

Too many Americans are not prepared to survive in the event of natural disasters, or other unusual circumstances that could occur in the future, such as economic chaos and hyper-inflation. Preparation is the key to survival in the event of unprecedented events. More and more American's are returning to the practice of self-reliance and independence. Preparation, and practice, could mean the difference between survival and starvation.

Runaway inflation in Germany and Argentina followed the same inflationary path that the US is presently on. With runaway inflation, the price of a loaf of bread doubled daily until it cost billions of the country's currency. This is the primary reason that more and more American's are putting away supplies of food, because food always has been, is now, and forever will be the greatest dependency, as well as the most comforting source of safety and security for every human being on our planet. Why is this happening? Read on?

The National ID card is expected to be required in order to buy food. Christians searching the Book of Revelation believe that for about half the 7-year tribulation or 3 years no one will be able to buy or sell without the "mark" (most consider this the ID card.) Global warming whether real or fabricated will likely be used to control fertilization of crops and tax farmers out of business. Legislation to prevent people from gardening is being proposed. The Doomsday Seed Vault is being built in Norway with the intent of being the only source for seed to grow food worldwide.

If in quarantines, martial law, disasters and emergencies people don't have their own individual supplies, they will be dependent and helpless like the miserable conditions after hurricane Katrina. On the issue of guns in the possession of the people, food, or the lack of it, has always been used to take the protection of guns away from people. (Cuba, China, Germany etc.) Imported food from countries with no safety standards for insecticides, fertilizers, bacterial and chemical contamination have entered our country's food supply and have proven to be very dangerous. Job loss and illness are hugely reduced in their impact financially and emotionally with a strong savings account of food.

How do YOUR savings taste? Gold prices have begun their long expected "trip to the moon" and smart investors around the globe are piling into the precious metals market to defend their assets from currency devaluation. Those with true vision, however, understand that when the dollar loses value, the prices of all tangible assets will explode, and FOOD is leading the way. Before protecting your financial future, you might consider protecting your life and the lives of those you love, with a supply of food.

Many companies, like e-Foods.com, that are supplies of emergency food resources are concerned that even they will be impacted by current and future crop failures. Their answer to this dilemna is the same for everyone: start now to create their own food storage supply as quickly as they can. Serious American crop failures are creating shortages of food to be processed into supplies for people to store. Even though shortages have not appeared in the grocery stores as soon as we become dependent on the 2009 crop everyone will be affected.

Alexis Arguello: Remembering A Champion

By Ross Everett

Alexis Arguello, one of the greatest boxers to ever compete , was found dead in his Managua, Nicaragua home in early July of an apparent suicide. He was 57 years old. Arguello was found with a gunshot wound to his chest, but his high political stature in the country meant that an investigation would be forthcoming to verify that it was indeed self inflected. Arguello was the mayor of Nicaragua's capital city at the time of his death.

Known for his class outside the ring as much for his tenacity inside the ring, hes best known to casual fight fans for his epic war in'82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Though Arguello would lose via--th round knockout (amid some controversy due to an apparent mystery drink offered to Pryor by his trainer Panama Lewis) it was a thrilling toe to toe battle that even the most knowledgeable boxing experts remember fondly to this day. Ring Magazine not only named it Fight of the Year, but later would dub it Fight of the Decade. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:

"It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did."

Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport. Arguello never lost a fight at-0 pounds and would end his career with an astounding 82-8 record with 65 knockouts and championships in three different weight classes. At the time, he was only the sixth man in boxing history to hold title belts at three different weights.

Ironically, Arguellos career didn't get off to a good start and he lost his debut in'68 via first round TKO. After that, he seldom lost again and would go on to be respected as one of the best pound for pound fighters of his day. He was at his best against his toughest adversaries including Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. Bob Arum remembered him not only as a great fighter, but as a great man:

"Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter. He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person."

The articulate, intelligent Arguello was frequently quoted on the fight game and how champions should conduct themselves. Here, he speaks of his attitude toward his opponents:

"Of course after the fight you want to make sure that you're okay and so is the other guy, its a brotherhood in there, so you want to make sure everyone is okay after the war is over."

Arguello didnt fight for his first title until he'd had 58 fights, and would frequently admonish boxers who didn't show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:

"When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud."

Most significantly, Arguello loved boxing and sought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:

"I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it."

While the modest Arguello would never say it himself, that was for from a one sided debt and he contributed more than his fair share to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness.

The Only Victoria Cross of 6th June 1944

By Rob Atherton

The 6th June 1944 witnessed the greatest invasion force ever land on the beaches at Normandy just a few hours after a large number of paratroopers had landed in German occupied France. D-Day was now underway.

A huge number of Allied soldiers landed on the five beaches of Normandy; Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha and Utah. There were countless acts of bravery yet there was only one single Victoria Cross granted on D-Day. It was given to CSM Stan Hollis who ended up on Gold Beach.

Hollis was a seasoned veteran who had previously seen action at Dunkirk, El Alamein and Sciliy. He had previously been captured by the Afrika Korps but managed to get away to rejoin the war.

Discipline wise, Hollis was never a model soldier yet on D-Day, there was no doubting his expertise as a soldier. He had also been recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal while in action in Italy and it was as part of the offensive on the Mont Fleury Battery that Hollis earned his Victoria Cross in action with the Green Howards regiment.

While his company, advanced off the landing beach, he observed two pillboxes had been missed. As Hollis went along to look into, the Nazis inside commenced shooting. Hollis attacked them and eliminated both pillboxes acquiring quite a few pows in the act. This made it possible for the primary exit from the beach front to stay open.

Later on that day near the village of Crepon, Hollis engaged the Germans with a Bren gun to free 2 British troopers who had been cornered in a building. He successfully freed both soldiers. The bravery exhibited by Hollis in Normandy on D-Day preserved many British lives and he was given the Victoria Cross. Holllis was wounded in Sept of that year and the next month was given his medal by King George VI. Today, his Victoria Cross is on show at the Green Howards Museum in Yorkshire alongside a number of other Victoria Cross accorded in battle to other soldiers of the regiment.

Celtic Weddings

By Owen Jones

Celtic wedding are an perfect way of showing your being a Celt. It is also a way of incorporating traditional values, symbols, themes and customs into major events in your life. However, Celtic wedding are hugely popular not only among people with a Celtic tradition, but among other couples who are taken by the ancient Celtic culture.

Celtic wedding have traditional symbolic motifs, often based on the Celtic knot. Welsh, Irish and Scottish families will sometimes marry in ancient buildings like castles or old manors, but that is not the standard. A traditional Celtic wedding is not greatly different from a normal British wedding in a lot of ways.

However, the number of similarities between Celtic wedding ceremony traditions and normal British-style weddings goes a lot further than that. If you want a traditional British style wedding, you will be going unwittingly for a Celtic wedding. But you can beef up the Celtic element of the wedding ritual even further without sinking into silly theatrics.

This is a traditional Celtic poem about when to marry:

Marry when the year is new, Always loving, kind and true.

When February birds do mate, You may wed, nor dread your fate.

If you wed when March winds blow, Joy and sorrow both you'll know.

Marry in April when you can, Joy for maiden and for man.

Marry in the month of May, You will surely rue the day.

Marry when June roses blow, Over land and sea you'll go.

They who in July do wed, Must labour always for their bread.

Whoever wed in August be, Many a change are sure to see.

Marry in September's shine, Your living will be rich and fine.

If in October you do marry, Love will come but riches tarry.

If you wed in bleak November, Only joy will come, remember.

When December's showers fall fast, Marry and true love will last.

Here are a few other traditions:

Loving Cup: The traditional cup is a two-handled bowl with Celtic designs etched onto it. The idea of the Loving Cup ceremony is for the bride and groom to share their first drink together as husband and wife and to demonstrate the coming together of their two families.

The Bell of Truce: A bell is blessed and then given to the bride and groom. The couple is required to ring the bell, while thinking loving thoughts of each other. The bell is then kept at home as a token of the wedding day. If an argument begins, the bell can be rung by either the husband or wife to call a truce. The tinkling sound is intended to remind the couple of their wedding vows and to help them relive happy memories from their wedding day.

Handfasting: Early Celts used to ?tie the knot?. It dates back to a pre-Christian custom of literally tying a couple's wrists together in a form of probationary marriage lasting a year and a day, at the end of which a new agreement was made or the couple parted ways.

Bride's Bouquet: In Celtic wedding traditions brides carried herbs beneath their veils to symbolize fidelity, and spices to ward off evil spirits.

Ring finger: Ancient Celts thought that there was a vein in the third finger of the left hand that ran directly to the heart, so ring placed on that finger denoted a strong love and vow to the other.

Wedding cake: A thin loaf was broken over the bride's head at the end of the ceremony to indicate fertility. The wheat from which it was made symbolized fertility and the guests readily picked up the pieces for good luck charms.

It was also common for the Celtic groom to throw a handful of coins into the crowd after the wedding, in the hope that this would bring them good fortune in the years ahead.

Choose Your Wedding Ring Wisely

By Owen Jones

There is a huge number of wedding rings available in the shops these days. In fact, you have the world of wedding rings to pick from. The high street shops in a large town have a very good assortment, but the Internet lays the best jewellers and the best styles out for your inspection.

So, it is very important that you take your time when choosing one. Maybe the enormous range of wedding rings makes that more difficult not easier. Diamond wedding rings have been the most popular since ordinary working people could afford them, before that a plain band of gold had to be enough, for people who could afford that much.

Nowadays, Western people have become more adventurous and they are choosing other stones like the stunningly beautiful blue sapphire. Some even choosing not to have a stone at all, going back to tradition, so to speak. However, there are plenty of examples of not so plain bands of gold too.

There is the Irish Claddagh ring with its distinctive two hands holding a crowned heart symbolizing love, friendship and loyalty; and there is the Celtic Knot with its intricately interwoven strands twisting and turning without end, standing for eternity and eternal love despite the twists and turns and difficulties of daily life.

So, choosing a wedding ring is not just a question of picking a beautiful wedding ring, you should be choosing one that says what you want it to say. You could look up on the Internet what the different metals and various stones symbolize traditionally. If you cannot find a ring that says what you want, consider having one made. It is not as expensive as you might think.

Tradition is a good thing when it comes to wedding rings. After all, you want your ring to express your everlasting love and devotion for the person you are giving it to and your marriage could last fifty or sixty years, especially with people living longer these days. With a bit of luck, you will wear this ring for the rest of your life, so pick a style that seems timeless to you.

Picking a wedding ring is not as straightforward as it looks, because you are going to be wearing your ring every day for the rest of your life, so it should be something that you will not get tired of in a couple years. You should look at and try on many rings in order to get one that feels comfortable. You will want a ring that does not look out of date in ten years time. The simplest method of doing that is to go for a traditional style, because those styles have already stood the test of time.

One last piece of advice is to ask the jeweller to verify the total carat weight of the stones in the ring and the weight of each individual stone and the quality and weight of the metal (although it should be hallmarked) on paper, then if it gets lost or stolen you have something to show the insurance company.

How We can Solve the Economic Crisis

By Sandy Kokal

One location President Obama, Speaker-To-Be John Boehner, Congressman Paul Ryan, or Sarah Palin could turn to for wisdom on the current dollar crisis is the editorials of the Ny Instances. Not the editorials of right now, but those that were issued in the course of the mid-1940s, in the event the nations about to become victorious in Planet Struggle II have been meeting at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, to lay the groundwork for a post-war financial system. The Times issued editorial after editorial vital with the Bretton Woods negotiations and their architect, John Maynard Keynes. It turns out that the editorials had been the work of a solitary, prophetic editorial writer, Henry Hazlitt.

Hazlitt cautioned that what was becoming set up at Bretton Woods was an inflation trap. He turned out to become right, as well as the system unraveled in 1971, when President Nixon closed the gold window. Bretton Woods unraveled around what, in retrospect, seems a modest drop inside the value of the dollar - one thing like 10% - to a 38th of an oz of gold from the 35th that obtained below Bretton Woods. This ushered financial arrangements that, below the leadership of President Reagan as well as the Fed chairman at the time, Paul Volcker, proved serviceable to get a although but is turning out to get inadequate in an era of lesser leaders.

No doubt Hazlitt, had he lived, would have mentioned the failure was inevitable. His warnings in the The big apple Instances stand as one with the excellent scoops in all of newspapering. The oeuvre is anthologized in a very book that Hazlitt himself put together known as "From Bretton Woods To World Inflation." Issued in 1984, it consists of a lot more than twenty of his editorials from the Times, most of them in the 1940s, but starting with 1 in the 1934, called "The Return to Gold," which contains a warning that could not be more relevant to today's debate when the G20 is feuding around the prospect of competitive devaluations:

"There is no more a 'natural value' for an irredeemable forex than there is for any promissory note of a individual of uncertain intentions to pay for an undisclosed sum at an unspecified date. Finally, it's been discovered that ambitious depreciation, unlike aggressive armaments, can be a game that no Government is just too poor or too weak to play, and that it can cause nothing but general demoralization." Later, he cautioned, by way of an editorial within the Times: "The Greatest solitary contribution the United States could make to planet forex stability right after the war would be to announce its determination to stabilize its own currency."

An additional memorable 1 of Hazlitt's editorials of the Instances, from February 1945, is referred to as "Supply Creates Demand." It cautioned against the fallacy that we could be "saved from disaster following the struggle only by a continuation of huge Government spending and deficit financing." The fallacy was based on the notion that "purchasing power" should be kept above "production." Hazlitt warned that would result in the "crude inflationary theory that we can keep gong right after the struggle only through the process of continually growing money payments regardless of production." Does this sound familiar?

The Hazlitt compendium also contains a celebrated editorial called "Gold vs. Nationalism," which was issued in the Instances on March 17, 1945. It sketched a single from the renowned paradoxes, which is that agreements like Bretton Woods, which appear, to the face of it, to get archetypes of multi-nationalism are actually the reverse. The genuine trans-national concept of the single regular to which all international locations could, or could not, repair is gold. The reverse, the recipe for strife, was a "system beneath which every single nation individually could be totally free to permit whatever unsound policies it wished, although the nations collectively would have to bail it out with the difficulties into which it fell as a consequence." Greece couldn't have put it better.

* * *

Years later, Hazlitt himself was asked, in an interview by the Austrian Economics Newsletter, why he thought the editorials didn't have more effect. Quoth he:

"As you may remember the guiding spirit at that conference was John Maynard Keynes. The delegates had been generating inflationary selections every day. I was tirelessly pointing out that these choices had been inflationary. No one else seemed to be pointing this out and no person paid any interest to what I was saying. Actually, I believe an awful lot of individuals have been astonished that the new York Instances was taking this strange eccentric position. Once the 43 nations represented all signed the agreement adopting the Bretton Woods program, Arthur Sulzberger, then publisher from the Times, known as me into his workplace and said, 'Look, Henry, I've been letting you create these issues, although I had misgivings about them, but now that 43 nations have agreed to accept the settlement, I do not see how the Times can carry on to oppose it.' I replied, 'Mr. Sulzberger, if you really feel that way, I can't continue to publish any much more editorials within the Ny Instances around the settlement; I believe it is too harmful.'"

The Times has stuck with the Keynesian errors all the way up by means of Professor Krugman, and it has been by no indicates alone in its willingness to swing behind Bretton Woods. However it has left, inside the oeuvre of Hazlitt's editorials, a record that will repay a visit by the politicians of these days, once the dollar - which beneath Bretton Woods was really worth a 35th of an oz. of gold - is really worth less than a 1,400th of an oz. of gold and in the event the 20 leading countries of the globe are in disarray and when a new generation of politicians is rising inside a new Congress which will be searching for a way forward.

Now Is The Time To Buy An Apartment In Rio De Janeiro Brazil.

By Cibele Matos

Carnival, the enchanting gyrations of Samba, the astounding exotic beaches as well as the generally outgoing Brazilian lifestyle aren't the sole purposes why most people would like to pay a visit to or perhaps live in Brazil, the real-estate sector, particularly in Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo and Barra de Tijuca is booming in a major way. Property prices for both homes and apartments inside the Marvelous City are increasing.

The Brazil economy is growing at a robust velocity thanks to its large quantity of commodities such as Oil, precious metals, coffee as well as some other emerging business markets. The Bovespa has been energetically increasing ever since the problems within the Untied States. As a result, the middle class segment has been widening and those individuals are in the market and capable to afford property. In the past, the interest rates were very high and lending products were not as easy to come by but because the selic rate has been brought back to an appealing level for borrowing money, this has added to the boom.

Lenders are approving mortgage loans at an unprecedented rate and even though the real estate markets inside nations like the United states and England have been in a major record level slump, the growing market of Brazil is seeing robust economic times. And because Brazil is the 8th biggest economy in the world and is displaying no indications of letting up, buying a home or apartment there is a dependable and steady investment.

Market trends for rental property has been a terrific reason to buy property in Brazil. Their tourism has never been stronger, especially in Rio de Janeiro and with the nation geared up to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, the infrastructure will encounter enormous improvements and tourism is only going to get better. Which signifies if you are renting apartamento to business travelers or families on vacation, vacancies will likely be rare and you will be fetching top dollar rental rates.

You can't ignore the data in terms of considering the purchase of a house or apartment in Rio de Janeiro or South america overall. During the past eight years, over twenty million Brazilians have improved upon their position and have been elevated out of poverty. Mix that with high demand and low supply (Brazil has about five million fewer housing units than it needs), you will have a formula for prolonged progress and expansion. Even with brand new high rise complexes being constructed at a record level, demand is still outpacing supply. The Brazilian banking institution Caixa Economica said this current year it expects mortgage loan lending to jump to $42 billion in 2010, up from $28 billion last year.

Individuals are stating that Brazil is very comparable to what the United states was at the 1950's and 60's. Right now there is a massive volume of expansion happening and with an abundance of space still available for continued development, the real estate marketplace is essentially untapped.

What Freedom Really Means

By Marc J. Victor P.C., Attorney At Law

I Recognize you say you enjoy freedom. Almost everybody states they enjoy and valuate freedom. Even such homicidal scoundrels as Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein laid claim to support or preach freedom.

"The German people are not a warlike nation. It is a soldierly one, which means it does not want a war, but does not fear it. It loves peace but also loves its honor and freedom." Adolf Hitler to Reichstag in Berlin February 1936

"[Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti] blood will light torches, grow aromatic plants, and water the tree of freedom, resistance and victory." Saddam Hussein, Iraqi Radio, January 26, 1999

It is comfortable to merely lay claim to back up freedom, but it is often more arduous to assume the occasionally alarming implications of such a call.

Did you ever wonder what it really means to say, "I'm for freedom?" It is difficult for me to express how unimpressed I am by the enthusiasm of a person to strongly support the rights of another person to use their freedoms in exactly the same way they themselves exercise their own freedoms. For example, alcohol users who support the rights of others to use alcohol or marijuana users who support the rights of others to use marijuana does not seem such a principled stance to me.

On the other side of that coin, citizenry who unwaveringly and enthusiastically affirm the rights of additional adults to use their freedoms1 in methods they themselves would never personally employ in is sincerely exalting. A true freedom posture is about living with the autonomous rights of additional adults to peacefully employ their bodies and their material possession in manners you personally take issue with, virtuously oppose, find disgracing, ill proposed, disadvantageous or completely absurd.2 Indeed, this is the test to ascertain whether a person candidly supports the conception of freedom.

The adult users of the awfully damaging and frequently addicting drug named "alcohol" who contradict the legalization of marijuana since they personally prefer not to partake of marijuana are, in freedom terms, congruent to the adult users of marijuana3 who counterbalance the legalization of methamphetamine since they personally opt not to use methamphetamine.4

An interchangeable instance can be discovered in the domain of free speech. Americans justly take pridefulness in their right to free speech. So long as the speech is "unobjectionable" there is no argument. However, when less-traveled radicals like the Ku Klux Klan or the Neo-Nazis prefer to peacefully march, numerous self announced free speech admirers look to use the legal philosophy to censor them.5 6

These are the alarming significances one must bear and adopt to genuinely be an individual who urges freedom. To hold differently indicates your freedoms really broaden no farther than some other person's individualized predilection considering their own freedom. This conception is what I name, "The dark side of freedom."

I question when most citizens congratulate themselves on adoring freedom, they have in mind forceless concepts like the rights of other people to adjudicate for themselves where to go on vacation or what model of car to purchase. This forceless concept of freedom doesn't render much contention because a majority of people personally harmonize with any determination a different person attains in these expanses.

Plainly recognising that other adults bear a right to carry their own lexistances as they prefer does not imply we are compelled to concur with or corroborate whatever they allege or execute. If we decide, we may search to peacefully carry them to behave as we consider they had better act. Further, admitting the rights of others doesn't mean we are broadcasting a message of commendation respecting their alternatives. Indeed, we are free to peacefully post subject matter* of disfavor if we prefer and they are free to ignore our messages entirely if they choose.

In one of my additional articles titled, "Legalize Methamphetamine!" I argue that the war on drugs should be ceased. I have been asked several times to change the title of my article to something similar to, "End the Drug War" or to some other tiresome but uncontroversial title.7 In fair-mindedness, the title is somewhat unfinished. I am deliberating changing it to, "Legalize Methamphetamine and Crack Cocaine!" or to, "Legalize Methamphetamine and All Other Horribly Addictive Drugs!" My aim here is to stress that urging for freedom is occasionally not as comfortable and fashionable as it initially may seem to the casual self announced freedom admirer. Still, it is imperative if we are to sustain freedom.

In conclusion, forceless freedom preachers are not freedom proponents at all. If we are to once more be the land of the free, we urgently necessitate folks to powerfully urge for freedom; in all its luster and in all its tastelessness.

1 By using their "freedoms" I mean being in control of your own body, time, money and other property. This does not include using another's body, time, money, or property without their consent. Freedom includes the notion that all voluntary conduct between consenting adults, whether others approve or not, is absolutely legal.

2 Don't be confused by the concept that a person could morally oppose an activity yet strongly support its legality. A moral question and a legal question should be two entirely different questions. Some of my friends morally oppose prostitution while supporting its legalization. There is no contradiction. Questions about "right" and "wrong" are also different questions than questions about what should be "legal."

3 Or any other substance.

4 Yes, I know and agree with you about the awful consequences of methamphetamine use. Yes, I know it will rot the teeth out of your mouth and destroy your skin and possibly your life if you use it. I would strongly discourage anyone from ever trying or using it.

5 I agree with nothing said by either group, but I absolutely support their right to peacefully say whatever they want. It is important to note that nobody is required to listen to them. People have a right to peacefully protest against them and even to ridicule them for their deranged views.

6 When a Christian pastor in Florida recently threatened to publicly burn a Koran, Fox News presented legal "scholars" who generated creative ideas to use the law in an attempt to stop this constitutionally protected expression. The pastor ultimately backed down.

7 I have even been asked to delete the exclamation point in favor of a question mark. I like the exclamation point.

Factors That Boost A Coin's Worth

By Vic Thompson

Old gold coins have rare historical memories that everyone wants to hold dear. They have become part of the most sought after collector items in the world. Those keeping them are holding gems that are of immense value today, but maybe you were not aware of this. Just to learn more about these precious rare coins.

At first the coins were minted to commemorate important historical events in those countries but later they became very rare. Most of them can date many thousand years of historical happenings that took place and have evolved for many centuries.

The coins have historical importance and were once issued to commemorate particular events that happened in those countries many years ago which explains their value. You might find special designs on them that are easily identifiable.

The coins are dearly cherished because they were minted for general use but the main aim was as celebrations of unique achievements and events in those countries. The people who really hold great pride in owning these precious historical coins are called Numismatists. To them, the coins are historical collectibles just like valuable souvenirs.

Very old historical memories are to be found in these coins related to the countries that minted them to celebrate important occasions of old. New rulers also had the habit of ordering for new coins to commemorate their rising to the throne.

The coins have even more value since they are often found to have been made of pure gold or silver.

Why are they a very rare type? Well, after the World War II, the world economy suffered a big blow. No countries could afford to mint anymore of such coins. That is why most of the coins after the period were made of base metal.

The coins are now priceless and it is due to their very rare nature. The collectors treasure them because of their history but also because they are mainly of pure gold or silver. The engravings on them tend to tell a history long forgotten but now of great importance to historians.

The Ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar

By Owen Jones

Before their adoption of the Western solar calendar system, the Chinese almost wholly followed their own lunar calendar for determining the times of planting and harvesting and festival days. Though people in China today use the Western calendar for almost all business, governmental and practical matters of daily life, the old arrangement still serves as the basis for working out many recurring holidays. This coexistence of two calendar systems has long been accepted by the people of China.

However, this does not only happen in China, it also occurs in most other Eastern countries, like Thailand, and most Arabic countries.

A lunar month is determined by measuring the period of time needed for the moon to finish its full cycle of 29 and a half days, a standard that makes the lunar year a full eleven days shorter than its solar counterpart. This difference is made up every 19 years by the addition of seven lunar months.

The 12 lunar months are further divided into 24 solar divisions characterized by the four seasons and times of heat and cold, all of which bear a close relationship to the annual cycle of agricultural work.

The Chinese calendar - very much like the Hebrew calendar- is a combination of the solar and lunar calendars in that it attempts to have its years coincide with the tropical year and its months coincide with the synodic months. It is not surprising that a few similarities exist between the Chinese and the Hebrew calendar.

For example, an ordinary year has 12 months, a leap year has 13 months. An ordinary year has 353, 354, or 355 days, a leap year has 383, 384, or 385 days. When working out what a Chinese year will be like, one must make a number of astronomical calculations.

First of all, you have to determine the dates of the new moons. In these cases, a new Moon is the completely black Moon (that is to say, when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun), not the first visible crescent, as is used in the Islamic and Hebrew calendars. The date of a new moon is then the first day of a new month.

The reason why the majority of countries which had their own calendars had to dump them in favour of the Western, Julian calendar that we use today, is business. First the British and then the Americans ran international business and they used the Gregorian calendar. Anyone who sought to work with them had to follow suit. This is why national policy often varies from local custom in Third World countries.

The government desires to deal on the International markets, but the ordinary family in the country can not. So, the government took up the Gregorian calendar but the people only pay lip service to it. I live in Thailand and people here do not even use the 24 hour day divided into two halves. Their day has four sections of six hours each and the first part starts at 6AM, not midnight. Therefore, they have four 4 o'clocks a day, for instance but no 7 o'clocks. They are also 543 years ahead of us, although this is more common, for instance in Muslim countries.

Archery Dealers On And Off Line

By Owen Jones

Do you have a leisure pursuit that you like to carry out out of doors or are you permanently stuck to the chair in front of your computer? If you never get out, then that is a shame and you ought to take that common piece of advice and get out more often .

And do what? - you may ask. Yes, well that is your concern, is it not? But there are hundreds if not thousands of things that you can do in the open air and they are all better than sitting down in front of your computer no matter what you are doing with your PC.

I will confess that I spend too much time at my desk, although, in my defense, I will say that that is how I make my living. However, I do like to get out-of-doors sometimes too. I live in a country where foreigners, such as myself, are not allowed to own or carry anything that might be construed as a weapon. This includes penknives as well.

When I venture out into the beautiful countryside it is only to walk with my wife and look for animals - mostly snakes and birds.. However, I have had a lifelong fascination for archery.

Something within me desires to be able to strike a target from a long distance. I do not want to kill anything, but I am OK with people who do so long as it is for a decent reason.

It would be fantastic to manufacture a bow and the arrows to accompany it. I am Welsh and have always wanted a Welsh longbow, although it takes a lot of strength to pull a longbow. The minimum draw weight in medieval days used to be 160 lbs for a war bow, for hunting it was 100 lbs, but these days it is more like 60 lbs.

However, this is still pretty heavy for contemporary man, who does not often pick up anything weightier than a pint of beer.

There are some great archery dealers, but if you do not live near one, you ought to go on line and either order from there or get a catalogue sent to you. Two good places to begin are 'Footed Shaft' and 'Three Rivers' archery suppliers.

Both of these companies will send you your chosen goods through the post and they have any type of archery equipment that you could require. For example, they have finished goods such as bows and arrows, but they also supply nocks, feathers, arrow shafts and points so that you can create your own arrows.

Do you want to make your own bow too? No problem. You can either buy a kit with all the bits and instructions or you can buy a book or DVD and buy the parts yourself.

These and other on line archery equipment dealers provide good value for money and have very comprehensive stocks of archery products. Their catalogues and web sites are easy to navigate and use as well.

The Most Deadly Day in the British Army's History

By Rob Atherton

1st July 1916 saw Britain and her Allies started an extensive offensive along a 25 mile part of the Western Front. The offensive happened to the north of the River Somme in rural France. Little villages are dotted all over the area along with the town of Albert. It was to be the battle that for lots of people, defined the horrors of the trench warfare of The First World War.

The Battle of the Somme lasted roughly four months with very little reward for Allied forces. The casualties endured by either side were terrible; the British Army endured 420,000 killed and wounded, the French Army 200,000 and the Germans practically half a million.

The Germans were dug in deep and strategically held the high ground thus it was clear a major effort would be essential to make inroads into German defences. The plan was to lay down an artillery barrage for 7 days before the attack. Furthermore, many mines were laid beneath the German lines. It was felt that the mines and artillery would bring about such destruction, Britain and her Allies would just simply need to move over no mans land and occupy the trenches. Sadly, this was far from the situation.

For 7 days prior to the attack, a fearsome barrage was laid down by Allied Forces firing 1.7m shells. Even so, the German trenches were dug deep into the earth delivering them with relative protection from the barrage. The mines did contribute to deaths as intended but in general, the Germans had enough time to make ready their defences once the artillery ceased and Britain and her Allies went over the top.

All along the line, the scenario was repeated. Brave men went over the top and were cut down before getting anywhere close to their objectives. At Beaumont Hamel, only 68 of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment, ended the day unharmed out of about 800 men. At La Boisselle, the Tyneside Irish was almost destroyed as it attempted to advance more than 1 mile across open ground in full sight of German machine guns.

Even so, there were some positive results. The French Army had made advances in the north and south of the lines. The 36th Ulster advanced on and took the Schwaben Redoubt as a result becoming certainly one of the few to attain their main objective. Sadly, running out of ammo, German counter attacks forced the Ulstermen to pull back later that evening.

The 1st day of the Somme had cost Britain about 54,000 casualties, 21,000 of those being killed. Now, the site of the Schwaben Redoubt is marked by the Ulster Tower and close by at Thiepval, the Memorial to the Missing commemorates the names of about 70,000 men who fought at the Battle of the Somme.

Book Review: The Civil Rights Movement

By Todd Rutherford

The Civil Rights Movement is most remembered as a challenging time for African-Americans and for women who were seeking equal treatment, and an end to discrimination. When revisiting the demonstrations commonly associated with the movement, it is easy to forget the minorities working for the Federal Government during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. In The Two-Edged Sword, Donald Tucker gives a full account of his life, the life of a Black man working for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, Army, and Secret Service during a volatile time in the United States.

Tucker's description of life in Chicago during Part 1 of his book, gives the reader an insight into his childhood, which serves to set the scene for the rest of the book. Growing up in Chicago while sharing a minute living space with 9 other people, and still knowing he was lucky when compared to others in the neighborhood, influenced Tucker's view of the world. Though he was exposed to racial injustice, and aware of police dishonesty, Tucker worked hard to secure higher education in order to find a rewarding career.

The Two-Edged Sword goes on to expose a another side of the Federal Government as Tucker shares his initial experiences with the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Shortly after joining the FBN (now known as the DEA), Tucker was placed undercover. Unlike white counterparts, Tucker was provided with no training and little back up, since it was assumed his race alone gave him all the cover he needed. Only a few months after joining the FBN, Donald Tucker was drafted into the United States Army.

While serving in the Army, Tucker found himself constantly faced with subtle or extremely direct racism, from civilians and fellow soldiers alike. After training side by side with white soldiers, Tucker was forced to choose between his dignity and his career in the midst of a desegregation demonstration. The choice he ultimately made became the first in a series of hard professional and personal decisions that Tucker was forced to make throughout his years of service.

The Two-Edged Sword introduces readers to an entirely new side of the Federal Government, during the height of the civil rights movement. Instead of focusing solely on the day-to-day grind or office politics, Tucker gives readers an inspiring account of one black man's struggle to balance two complicated lives without compromising his morals. Through his story, Donald Tucker shows that it is possible to succeed and prosper, even when those who should be supporting you seek to hold you back.

Will the US Lift the Cuban Embargo to Allow Cigars to Come Into the US?

By Dave Dylan

Have you ever sampled the delights of a real Cuban cigar? Probably not, though you've heard about them everywhere. Unfortunately, a Cuban cigar humidor is not an option if you are an American. These cigars are made exclusively in Cuba and are said to be one of the finest cigars in the world. Even the cigar rollers in Cuba are said to be of such high caliber, that to smoke a true Cuban is a delicacy. Cuban cigars are labeled with the patriotic motto "Hecho en Cuba", or made in Cuba.

The possession of Cuban cigars has been a crime in America ever since the ultra-patriotic 1960s. In the year 1962, President Kennedy ordered a trade embargo act against Cuba and Fidel Castro because of anti-communist Cold War as well as Cuba's aggressive support of the U.S.S.R. What really destroyed the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba?

John F. Kennedy had a beef with Castro's communist regime for quite some time. Back then, at the height of the Cold War, communism was regarded as something evil. It didn't help when Cuba seized control of the island in 1959 and when he supported the U.S.S.R by allowing them the right to create missile bases on the island-so close to U.S. soil. This was interpreted as a major slight against the U.S. and so they increased the pressure. The U.S. even tried to have Castro assassinated!

Why hasn't the trade embargo act been lifted today? Because it would mean supporting communism and supporting a man who was once considered a public enemy of the U.S. The United States has not lightened up on its stance, even after several administration changes. To this day, not only are Cuban cigars banned in the U.S., but acquiring these cigars in any country, if you are a U.S. citizen, is an American crime.

It's easy to criticize the U.S. and to suggest they just lift the trade ban already, but there are many points that deserve consideration. What about the many Cuban exiles who have been abused by Castro's regime and who actually support the trade ban? Yes, it's all a political mess. The Cuban cigar remains one of the world's true underappreciated joys. If only all those parties involved, Castro, Obama and Charlie Crist could get together and have a smoke over it all and talk things through. Maybe that's just wishful thinking from us cigar lovers.

Alexis Arguello: Remembering A Champion

By Ross Everett

Alexis Arguello, one of the greatest boxers to ever compete, was found dead in his Managua, Nicaragua home in early July of an apparent suicide. He was 57 years old. Arguello was the mayor of Nicaragua's capital city at the time of his death.

Arguello is best known to fight fans for his epic battle in'82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Though Arguello would lose via knockout (amid some controversy due to an apparent mystery drink offered to Pryor by his trainer Panama Lewis) it was a thrilling toe to toe battle that even the most knowledgeable boxing experts remember fondly to this day. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:

"It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did."

While the first Pryor fight may have brought him the most mainstream notoriety, boxing cognoscenti are aware that Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport.

After that, he seldom lost again.

Arguello would frequently admonish boxers who didn't show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:

"When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud."

Most importantly, Arguello loved boxing and sought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:

"I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it."

While the modest, dignified Arguello would never say it himself he also gave back immeasurably to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness.

Why Buy Toys Made In The USA And Where Can You Get Them?

By Marie Shupp

It can be difficult nowadays to find toys made in the USA. No matter where you're shopping - in the mall or through big online retailers - it's likely that they will have been produced in foreign countries, simply as a way for the manufacturers to save money on labor. But if you still want to do your part to support your country, then there are ways to find products made in the USA.

What Are The Benefits Of Buying USA-Made Products?

One of the benefits to buying toys that have been produced in the USA is the fact that you'll be boosting the economy. The money you spend will support the people who are making the products, and you'll be keeping your money within the country.

If you're worried about the quality of the toys you give your children, then buying toys made in the USA can also give you more peace of mind. Many toys nowadays are made from plastics and other materials that contain toxins that will harm your child's health. Although there is debate as to what the risk really is, buying from the USA helps to ensure that toys are made using high manufacturing standards. And they will often be of a better quality, too!

Where Are Toys Made In The USA Sold?

Thanks to the internet, it's now easier than ever to find toys made within this country. For a start, there are a number of directories listing companies who manufacture their products within the USA.

When you're shopping in stores, ask the people who work there whether their products were made in the USA. They may not always know, but it's worth a try. Online, you can use websites' search features to look for "made in USA" items.

We're all used to buying toys that have been made in China, but what are the real consequences of this fact? You'll be indirectly supporting their government and policies that you won't always agree with. On top of this, you're also supporting cheap labor.

Next time you're shopping, try looking for toys made in the USA by checking labels, asking shop owners, and searching through directories online. Although this may not be the most convenient way to shop, you'll certainly be doing your part to protect your own economy - and find good quality toys in the process!

Archery Tips For Beginners

By Owen Jones

There are two main points that an archer has to do well to guarantee the best chance of consistently hitting the target. The first is to hold the string stable at full draw until the archer is ready to shoot and secondly, letting go of the string in the correct way every time. Most advice for beginners should help the novice to accomplish these two goals.

'Creep' is the first issue that a beginner should safeguard against. Creep is the phenomenon of the arrow, string and hand creeping forward as the archer takes aim. It is important to hold the arrow at full draw for uniformity. If the archer permits the hand to creep forward, the shot will not be constant. Creep is caused by lack of concentration and strain.

The strain comes from trying to shoot a bow that the archer is not yet strong enough to control. People, especially men often attempt to shoot a bow that is too powerful for them. If an archer is experiencing creep, the bow is probably too powerful for him or her at the moment. The archer should use a weaker bow and exercise more until they are stronger.

The effects of creep on the shot are that the archer will not learn how to determine the fall of the arrow over distance and so will almost certainly undershoot, that is, the arrow will possibly fall short. The only way to learn how to use the bow properly is to always shoot at full draw.

Tiredness can also lead to creep, but the archer can control this by resting well before a competition, staying fit and not using a bow that takes so much strength that it cannot be shot for the duration of the competition.

The novice archer has to learn how to release the arrow too. It is much more difficult to hit the target if the release is not correct. The novice should get an experienced archer to give a demonstration of the release so that he or she does not develop bad habits. The proper way to release the string is to relax the muscles in the tips of the fingers used to draw the string.

Novices often hurt their fingers after a couple of releases, so they try to release the string too quickly which can lead to pulling the string to the side a little. This little wobble can send the arrow off course.

The release should be clean and to the rear of the arrow, not to the side. If the release is to the rear, the arrow will fly accurately to where the archer pointed it. If the archer is having a lot of trouble hardening up the finger tips, it is possible to use a string release mechanism, which will take the strain off the finger tips until they can be hardened up.

An archer could try the karate methods of hardening the skin and the hand. One of these is to plunge the straight fingers into sand. An archer could also try a guitarists' technique, that of daubing the finger tips with methylated spirits from time to time.

Book Review: Communism Versus Democracy- Bulgaria 1944 To 1977

By Todd Rutherford

Imbued with thought-provoking detail and agonizing historical facts, Communism versus
Democracy- Bulgaria 1944 to 1977 provides an in-depth picture of Bulgaria's recent history (1944-1997). The text strives to educate readers on Communism and to provide insight into historical truth using a series of primary sources and eyewitness accounts. Nassya Kralevska-Owens employs her journalistic style to keep the narrative interesting, without losing its focus on factual events.

The theme of the work revolves around Communism, Cold War, and Bulgarian history at the end of the twentieth century. While there are myriad dense topics that would normally be difficult to comprehend, Communism versus Democracy features fluid sentence structure and clarity of concepts. Indeed, all readers-casual and avid-will better understand the history of Eastern Europe by empathizing with the plight of those that lived through-and survived this distressing time in history.

This historical work chronicles the heightened tensions and the inevitable abdication of Communist dictator Todor Zhivkov. Kralevska-Owens precisely portrays the clash between loyalists of the Communist era and the democratic leaders, looking for a way to forge a new future for Bulgaria, and Eastern Europe as a whole. This book offers new insight into the rise of the Bulgarian Communist Party, which consisted of a mere 6000 members. It discusses the fatal consequences for Bulgaria and its inhabitants as a result.

The author, understanding that validity is paramount for a documentary of such massive scope, supports the premise of the book with interviews from leading politicians, statesmen, and pro-democratic activists, confessions, archives, documents, historical books, newspapers and other publications, eye-witnesses, and excerpts from personal diaries. She pursues these sources from a journalist's "air of truth" perspective. Astonishingly, interviews included such preeminent figures as the first Democratic Prime Minister of Bulgaria.

On a stylistic level, this is a must-read for anyone who is interested in reading about Bulgaria's political history and the truth about Communism. Unlike the cumbersome blocked form of traditional history texts, Kralevska-Owens transitions smoothly through time periods, giving Communism versus Democracy a distinctly novelistic texture. Ultimately, the position that resonates soundly in Communism versus Democracy- Bulgaria 1944 to 1977 is that communism is a form of government that simply does not work in practice and inevitably leads to chaos.
