Archery As A Pastime And A Sport

By Owen Jones

We are all being advised to get out more often, so many individuals are looking for a reason for doing so. You could undertake a spectator sport like football, but that is not really going to do your body much good, you ought to be looking for a participation sport.

If you are younger, then play soccer by all means, but if you are getting on a bit, you will most likely be looking for a sport that is not quite so strenuous. Men like to aim and shoot things even if not kill them. Golf is an option, but I want to recommend that you give archery a try.

Archery has the edge over shooting a gun because it requires some physical fitness. It is not just a question of pulling, sorry, squeezing a trigger. If you take up archery, you will most likely want to develop some more upper-body strength, especially if the heaviest work you have done for the last twenty years is pick up a pen.

Archery is an rounded sport in many ways, depending on how much you get into it. Most novices will start out by going to an archery club and joining in for the day. People will lend them a bow and show them the safety aspects and the correct way to hold a bow and shoot an arrow. This should give you a good notion of which sort of bow you would like.

After a week or two, you may purchase your own bow and you might move from indoor target archery to outdoor target archery or even field archery, which is virtual hunting. From there, you will almost definitely meet people who take archery a stage further. You will meet competition archers, bow hunters and people who make their own equipment.

You might find one of these aspects of archery enthralling. You may take up bow hunting or even bow fishing. This will lead you off at a tangent, because you will have to learn about the animals that you hunt. You will have to learn where they live and what their lifestyles are. This means research.

Or you can take up the archery equivalent of clay pigeon shooting, which is called field archery. In field archery, the archers walk around a course and replica animals or standard targets will become visible at diverse distances. This is enjoyable.

You will also meet individuals who like to make their own arrows or even their own bows. This is another fascinating feature of archery. You can purchase the different components that go to make up an arrow and you can buy a kit to make a bow or you can start from scratch with an axe, a knife and a lathe. Again you will need to do a lot of research, in order to get your archery equipment just the way you want it.

This will lead you down yet another tangent to archery, but it will enhance your understanding of archery, increase your enjoyment of the sport and, as they say, add another string to your bow.

The Activities of the SOE

By Rob Atherton

Although it was officially established in July 1940, the SOE (Special Operations Executive) had been created in 1938 with the combination of 3 current, top secret sections just after Germany annexed Austria. Churchill's Secret Army was directed to "Set Europe Ablaze".

SOE operatives were directed to various Nazi occupied countries to simultaneously cause destruction behind German lines and in addition start to locate local resistance groups they would likely work with once the occasion for invasion came. Theatres of Operation involved France, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Yugoslavia, Greece, Hungary, Albania, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Denmark, Romania, Abyssinia and the Far East.

As operatives operated deep in Nazi held territory and they were recruited from an assortment of social class and background. The key criteria was that the probable agent had exhaustive understanding of the land they would operate in and in a position to pass as a local of that country. For that reason, those with dual nationality were highly desirable.

The renowned plane utilised by the SOE in France was the Westland Lysander. It was a small airplane which made it a great deal more challenging to observe and was sturdy enough to land on makeshift landing strips. It was used to ferry agents to and from the Britain along with collecting men and women who needed to be interviewed in London. Pilots who had been shot down were also typically brought back to the Britain by Lysander.

Amid the SOE group were also female agents and around 30% of the female operatives delivered into France from Section F, did not survive. The types of operations in each region were wide ranging. For example, in Poland, there was limited need to stir up the local population as there was already common hatred of the Nazis. This was in comparison to areas such as Vichy France where some locals worked with with the Germans and the probability of SOE operatives being betrayed was considerably increased.

For the period of World War II, the SOE had utilised about 13,000 people who directly helped or provided somewhere in the region of 1 million operatives.

Fantasy Weapons Are Often Too Fantastic

By George Solomon

The creation of fantasy weapons -or at least their naming-is largely based on psychological reasons. It served to bolster the power of the wielder or the importance of the weapon in varied ways. For example, Thor without his magic hammer Mjolnir cannot be a god, only a simple smith. Excalibur was the main instrument King Arthur of Camelot ascended the throne of England. Without it, he cannot be England's rightful heir to the throne after Uther Pendragon, his father. The symbolic sword Kusanagi is one of Japan's Imperial Regalia, symbols of the Emperor's divine descent.

Such swords and weapons are often imbued with magical powers to improve the owner's or wielder's invincibility. Durendal, Roland's indestructible sword, was said to be his most trusted companion. The Welsh legends has the sword Dyrnwyn, which was said to burst into flames on use and helps the user if the purpose is good, but burns the holder if he intends to use it for evil aims. The Irish legends have Fragarach, owned by the god of the seas, a sword that can smite medieval armour or any kind, no matter how impenetrable the armor is by any other sword or weapon.

For the fantasy weapons of the Twentieth Century, two world war weapons that may termed fantastic are the Me262 or Me163, as well as the Paris Gun. The Me262 was the first-ever jetfighter to fly the skies and bring down enemy airplanes (the RAF Gloster 'Meteor', a similarly-designed jet fighter, did not reach air combat operations until late 1944) . The Swallow began combat operations in the middle of 1944, and one 262 damaged a Mosquito in 26 July as the jetplane's first combat win. In contrast, the Meteor scored its first wins when it downed two V1 weapons on August 4, 1944. The rocket-armed Komet, a jetplane faster than the Swallow, saw limited role in the air war and did not figure prominently in it.

Meantime, the Paris Gun (Paris-Geschtz) was a long-barrel siege gun used to pound Paris, 120 kilometers away, in World War 1. The primary purposes was to instill terror in the hearts of Parisiennes so French resistance to German advance would weaken. Maybe the objective was achieved, because the citizens of Paris first believed they were being hammered by a new kind of super airweapon because there was no noise before the shells fell. On the other hand, Paris was not evacuated by civilians, and the German Army failed to occupy the city.

So weapons may be termed fantasy weapons, they need to be -or believed to be--- fanciful items. They are imbued with extraordinary powers or capabilities by the user, enough to become superior to comparable ones. Whether the endowment of extraordinary powers was by legend, fiction or real, the general purpose was create confidence in the individual holder, the group or nation so a positive outcome of the war may be attained, and develop a hero as center of faith for victory. In legends and fiction, these weapons are often successful or come to a romantic end, but for real-life ones, their service is often not worth the efforts and expectations accorded them.

The Reverse Merger Report - OTCBB

By James Scott

Private Placement Memorandums and Direct Public Offerings, the most common mistakes made. When gearing up to raise capital it is typically a business owners first instinct to simply throw together a business plan and find the cheapest company to put together the private placement memorandum and then seek funding. What these professionals don't realize is that they are doing things in reverse and often times a PPM is not a standalone solution to financial needs.

The first problem is the most companies will first write a business plan and cheap PPM and look for a capital solutions last, when strategically speaking, one should first find a full service solution who has a database of investors ready to fund properly structured corporations with well authored business plans and private placement memos. After you find a company that has a ready network of seasoned investors you will often find that this firm will also structure your business and documents so that you are able to attract the attention of these investors. Next, don't make the mistake of hiring just anybody to write your biz plan. You need to find a professional author who is well rooted in the art of technical writing and has a solid comprehension of your industry.

Now it's time to write the PPM. Here is a warning that will most likely go in one ear and out the other but you must never choose the cheapest service for your PPM you will regret it and this is a guarantee. Investors see these documents all day everyday and they know a template when they see it. Don't believe for a second that you will get a viable private placement memo that will actually achieve funding for anything less than $3,000; it's just not going to happen. There is too much work involved in putting a fund-able strategy together and you'll never find an experienced firm to do it for cheap.

The moral of the story is to first find an investor finder solution with a solid network of investors, second have this company write your business plan and private placement memorandum to fit the needs of their investor base and lastly, talk to this consultant about helping you perform a DPO (Direct Public Offering) to their group. This is what separates the men from the boys in the venture capital consulting industry.

Legitimate consultants who stand behind their work will take your PPM directly to their investor base and help you raise capital quickly. In return for this service the company may want a modest equity position in addition to their fee but it is always worth it and typically they will take the final step and have their investors pay to take your company public. This is the ultimate for any company that is seeking a long term funding solution.

Remember the order: 1. Find an investor finder 2. Have that company write your biz plan and PPM 3. Convince the firm to perform a DPO for fast funding 4. Offer some equity to sweeten the pot so that they take you public!

Battle of Britain - The Few Who Saved Britain

By Rob Atherton

The summer months of 1940 saw World War II come to the English skies as the RAF bravely stand up to the onslaught of Hitler's Luftwaffe. Immediately following a period of time referred to as the 'Phoney War', Hitler had ordered his forces to invade other European countries and there was hardly any opposition in Belgium, Netherlands or France.

Operation Dynamo had seen around 300,000 men of the BEF brought to safety by a flotilla of ships making the journey over from England to Dunkirk over a period of days. Soon Hitler had his sights on England. The white cliffs of Dover were clearly in view as the German High Command gazed past the English Channel from Calais.

Nonetheless, unless the skies of England were under German command, Hitler couldn't authorise Operation Sealion - the invasion of United Kingdom. With America being reluctant to participate in the war at this stage and her Allies overcome, Britain would need to face the Germans all alone.

Could Britain hold on until the autumn after which the weather would ward off the Germans from crossing the Channel? The country's hopes was in the hands of the fearless airmen of the RAF, "The Few" as Churchill later referred to them. It was not exclusively British pilots in the Royal Air Force, the Commonwealth was represented with airmen from an assortment of colonial outposts such as South Africa and Rhodesia as well as Poles and even a couple of Americans.

Hitler directed his bombers over to pound UK into submission however most importantly, their fighter escorts merely had the fuel for only a few minutes battle before they would have to go back home leaving the bombers unprotected. For the very first time, the Luftwaffe came up against solid resistance and there was to be no repeat of their quick victories on the Continent. The British airfields in the south east were taking a beating till one night in August 1940, a German bomber got lost and dropped its bombs over London before heading for home. In retaliation, the RAF conducted an air raid over Berlin.

Hitler was furious and instructed his aircraft to attack London and not the RAF airfields. This was a decisive turning point as it gave the RAF some much needed relief. The Luftwaffe failed to achieve the upper hand at any point and in mid September, Hitler indefinitely postponed Operation Sealion. The risk of attack was gone and Churchill spoke of the contribution of Fighter Command in a widely known speech "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few".

The number one fighter ace was Sgt Frantisek from the Czech Republic with a score of 17 kills. He flew in a Hawker Hurricane which was the true workhorse of Fighter Command but everybody remembers the iconic Spitfire. Sgt Frantisek was killed in October 1940.

The Battle of Britain was the first occasion the Germans had sustained a military defeat during World War II.

Understanding The Unique Prophecies Of 2012

By Henry Pilsner

There are an unlimited number of prophecies of 2012. Many people have difficulty understanding what they are supposed to mean for the future of the universe. Many of the predictions are connected to the end of the world. Some other issues are being forecast as well for this time frame. Another viewpoint is about a spiritual awakening that will take place at this time.

It is virtually impossible for anyone to know with any degree of certainty what would happen at a certain time frame in history. The best that we can do is hope that people use the 2012 prophecies and predictions that have been spoken well in advance as a guide to make decisions. When people choose to believe them too seriously problems tend to occur.

Sometimes the belief system that leads people to believe they are able to make better decisions regarding their own life is beneficial. People have the opportunity to make positive changes to the world around them on a daily basis. When a person understands the consequences of making bad decisions they will be more likely to behave in a different fashion.

Throughout history there have been many other times where prophecies have not come to pass. This is why people should not be overly worried about what has been spoken previously. If people spend too much time on what might happen they are missing the opportunity to change things in this moment. This is detrimental for most individuals because they are missing out on opportunity to make positive changes.

Nearly every person will want to know what is going to happen in the future. This is the desire to be able to have control over what is yet to come. Not knowing what is going to happen in the future can often cause a great deal of anxiety. When people do not understand what could happen in the future they will make incorrect decisions.

The future is an evolution. Understanding predictions and prophecies of 2012 has been very difficult for people throughout the ages. The options to make changes are not something that everyone takes advantage of in the proper fashion. The beliefs of any one individual or just their own opinions. They should not be given more credibility than anyone else's opinions.

Mobile Marketing And Politics

By Alex Speirs

When considering the question as to whether mobile marketing has a place in political advertising, look no further than President Barack Obama for the answer. Quoted quite adeptly after his stunning win for the Presidency, "A Victory for Obama, a Victory for mobile!!!", Mr Obama used mobile marketing to great effect! Read on......

Commercial advertising has long been a central feature of the US culture and is more prevalent than ever now in European countries and in many of the developed Asian countries. In the past few decades, political advertising too has increasingly become an essential tool in campaign strategies particularly for Presidential campaigns. But have traditional advertising methods given way to mobile marketing? Well, the answer is a resounding YES!

President Barack Obama owes a great deal to his effective use of mobile marketing in his own run for the Oval Office in 2008. In fact, it is said that mobile marketing played a pivotal role in his campaign and outreach strategies and may even have won him the election. Using two simple mobile platforms; the 62262 (spells OBAMA) common short code and the http://obamamobile.mobi or http://m.barackobama.com websites.

It is said that mobile marketing played a vital role in his campaign and outreach strategies . Using two simple mobile platforms; the 62262 (spells OBAMA) common short code and the http://obamamobile.mobi or http://m.barackobama.com websites. Obama's use of mobile was thought to be an important part of his Change message. His campaign managers and mobile marketing specialists used a combination of SMS text messaging, Mobile Website, interactive voice response, mobile video banner ads to reach out to U.S. voters and the rest is history.

If you need further convincing, then conversely, it is thought that the absence of mobile marketing in the US midterm elections recently, resulted in many campaigners failing to reach voters with their messages. What could be more personal than to reach potential voters and fence sitters than via their mobile phones? It is solicited contact from the outset. From those initial contacts, databases can be built and maintained for future campaigns. When compared to the cost of say, television advertising , with record amounts spend on political campaigning every election, this relatively inexpensive personalised advertising is money well spent!

Three Landmark Weapons of Modern Warfare

By George Solomon

Few will deny that the best technological endeavors of man have been directed towards developing weapons of war. Socialists will say it is actually because of the aggressive nature of man, who endeavored most of all to dominate his fellows as a matter of survival. If a man can command others he has a substantial buffer against outside pressures since he can marshal others to face the dangers before he himself has to.

Others may argue, however, that to respond to aggression of people with greater capabilities, those with less capacities must reduce if not eliminate the numerical advantage of the other via superior weapons. This is the essence of Hitler's vergeltungswaffen, the V1 and V2 rockets, and the Messerchmitt262, the first jetfighter ever to fly. Adolf Hitler sought to counter the Allied Powers' superiority in weapons quantity and men through 'miracle weapons' or, more exactly, 'vengeance weapons'.

But the landmark world war weapons are not the rockets, but the tanks. In both World War 1 and World War 2, the tank was the decisive weapon in many battles in various fronts: Africa, Europe, Russia and Poland. With tanks, much territory was captured or great damage inflicted on the enemy that for him retreat was the only option. When the tank was first introduced, for example, in the Battle of the Somme during World War 1, the Germans were caught greatly unaware by the formidable weapon they were forced to give ground. Technology won the day for the Allies at the time.

Thus Germany used the tank as main offensive weapon -along with air attacks--- in their blitzkrieg strategies in World War 2. Tank formations enabled Heinz Guderian's forces to penetrate very deeply into French territory in the first days of the conflict that they would have reached the English Channel had Hitler not stopped him. The German Army Command and Hitler believed Guderian was lying in his combat progress reports and commanded him to stop for verification. Thus, the miracle of Dunkirk came to pass.

In the American Civil War, among the most prominent civil war weapons will be the bayonet. Hand-to-hand- fighting was performed there in significant scale and the bayonet was a decisive weapon for either side. The bayonet eclipsed the sword which was a primarily cavalry weapon, and the repeating rifle which have not come yet in great numbers to play a pivotal role in the conflict. After the musket, the bayonet was the second most effective killing instrument at the time.

Among the medieval weapons, perhaps the most significant weapon -if it may be called so since it is for a defensive purpose--- is the knight's armor. A knight in his armor can kill many largely unprotected yeomanry and duel with a similar knight within a day without himself getting physically damaged ---only tired probably---, and still retire for the night to fight again the next day. He is much protected in his suit of armor that he can confident of surviving every battle, until the English long bow gave him his match.

But that is another weapon for further discussion.

Women in Politics and Their Influence on Fashion

By Shannon Holland

Female politicians are probably not your first choice when you think of international style icons. Smart, unfeminine suits seem to be the order of the day for these women as showing even the merest hint of womanly fashion is a sure sign that their credibility in the field will be damaged. Can our besuited female politicians, then, still make an impact on the fashion world?

Margaret Thatcher was a politician whose style choices were much talked about. A dressmaker's daughter, Thatcher used the power of fashion to her advantage and never made a public appearance without looking anything other than immaculate. Not only was she on (or ahead) of trend with her power suits and perfectly coiffed hair, she also managed to send out an unmistakeably businesslike image to the world. It is clear that her while her political legacy divided opinions, her fashion legacy is still lauded, having been photographed for Vogue several times and as recently as last year, aged eighty-two.

Since the power-dressing Iron Lady, have any other female politicians shown the same style? It appears not in Britain, whose female politicians have lived up to our conservative and old-fashioned image. America, however, has Sarah Palin - her red patent pumps and rimless glasses sent a clear message to people who might have previously ignored politics and sent the fashion world in America into a frenzy during the 2008 presidential elections.

Part of the problem is that politics is, and has long been, a male-dominated field. Women who take risks with their fashion open themselves up to debate about their capabilities as a politician and whether they'd rather be out shopping instead. This is a problem that women in government must overcome before they can ditch the conservative suits and be taken seriously both for their work and their style.

It's possible, that with more and more women entering into politics, that they soon they will be taken just as seriously for their work whether they are wearing skyscraper Manolo Blahniks or a twinset and pearls. But up until that point, politics is sadly lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of fashion icons.

How To Make New Friends

By Lisa Kohlberg

If you want to learn how to connect with people, you certainly have to learn how to meet friends. Friends are a part of your social life. There are only a number of people who do not want any friends but most of us want to be surrounded by them.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to ease up your anxiety and let you find new friends.

Start off by knowing what you really love to do during your free time. If you like to drink coffee or read books then join a book club where you can share the books you have read with people who have the same interests as you have.

Join social networking websites. This is much more popular these days. one tip though, always be true when you post your profile and always have your real photos on your page.

If you have a sport or any activity that you really like to try out, find someone or a group of people who are in to it. Then, you can approach them and ask them how it is done and the likes thus opening up another realm of possibilities.

Keep an open mind. Open yourself to the possibility that you are actually looking for friends and not someone special. People who instantly look for someone special are easily frustrated when all they want is just to be friends. So, meet friends first before other things.

Keep your conversations light. Nobody likes to talk to someone moody and grumpy so keep your conversation lighthearted and put up some smiles.

Eye contact should be done when you are talking to your new acquaintance. This means that you are meaning what you are trying to say thus incurring that you are telling the truth.

Global Economic and Political Strategies: The Fear and Chaos Formula of Power

By James Scott

Economics and Politics eventually converge and entwine into one unique process of strategy called 'Globalization'. And in the world of globalization there are the tacticians and the strategists just as in a corporation there is the board of directors and the 'C' level executives or in Politics there is the lobbyist and their puppet politician. Both political and corporate spectrums have their controllers and their talking heads and an agenda that is assimilated from the top to the bottom but the 'top' to the public is actually the bottom and the invisible are always in control. Let me explain.

The talking heads are little more than a distribution mechanism for the strategists behind them that have placed them in a position. The talking head is a willing participant, whether they are a congressman or CEO, these individuals possess one universal theme, they have limited ego and are willing to give up their personal schema in order to convince the public of their position. Behind them is an organization whether it be a board, lobbyist or special interest group that feeds them a daily script and/or voting schedule and the process is simple, the puppet keeps their position as long as they are willing to place personal ideas and convictions aside and regurgitate the information and ideologies of those who have placed them in this position.

An interesting note here is that I've consulted with some organizational front men who were completely unaware of the fact that their promotion to this particular position was engineered whether they are a CEO or a politician. Chaos is a strategy that always works, all you need are the right people with the most influential pedigrees to convince the character that right is left and up is down. The glove-puppet is classically the easiest to maneuver and will believe whatever he's told as long as his handlers paint the picture that he is the one with the power to distribute.

One aspect that people don't realize is that these organizations are characteristically a pyramid association and inter-reliant and at times the pieces work independent of the other and never actually converse in person but via indirect communication. These indirect communiqus are typically set up like an Olympic relay race where one party hands off a message or agenda and from one person to the next, each putting the necessary spin on the information so that by the time the concept is delivered to the 'face' to the union whether they be a political or corporate the message has all the necessary elements and support needed to complete the objective whether it be a vote in congress or a corporate strategy passed down by current or future 'agenda' based shareholders, through the rabbit tunnel and to the lips of the CEO.

Often times the concepts of chaos seen in the media for both of these stages is manufactured and not the actual reality but the potential reality as a market/vote support test to see the reaction before the action is facilitated. Whether the outcome is good or bad is all relative to the strategy of those controlling the agenda.

The individual identified by the public as the figurehead or decision maker, in most cases is anything but. Think George Bush Jr., and do some investigating and you'll find that he was, for the most part the brunt of jokes and considered a goofball by everyone within his family's social circle, university, business and even political but he was willing to place personal conviction aside to be the talking head for multiple conservative special interest groups, lobbyists and even religious organizations on the right.

Whether you consider this ethical or not it's the way it's always been done in large structured organizations of commerce and legislative. You have to admit, it's easier to have one sacrificial lamb than a dozen and the puppet masters can simply change out the individual delivering the message if his/her reputation catches up with them and dilutes the message.

The pyramid of power comes to a point at the top and the bottom as those actually in control are at the top, they distribute their message through the belly and at the bottom where the organization comes to a point again, and this is where the public believes the apex of power initiates. There is indeed order and power in chaos.

Easy Forex Intraday Currency Report

By Erin Holmes

The U.S. fiscal outlook dimmed after the disappointing reading from the November non-farm payrolls statement. The U.S. economic system increased 39,000 jobs in the month, a great deal less than the 150,000 general opinion estimation. The joblessness rate increased to 9.8% from 9.6%, the highest since April.

The forex market's impulse ended up being to sell the U.S. dollar as it dropped 100 pips versus essentially everything. The solitary exception was the Canadian dollar which often suffers on terrible U.S. employment information due to the nation's reliance on the U.S. consumer. Compounding CAD's losses was a mixed Canadian employment statement that saw 11K full-time jobs lost.

The speedy tumble in the Usd after the jobs report indicates a portion of the dollar's recent positive move has been due to anticipation that not all the $600 billion QE2 plan will be implemented as a result of a rebounding economy and jobs sector. Friday's non-farm payrolls ended a portion of those hopes but we wouldn't be so speedy to completely exclude some of that sentiment coming back. Additional actions of employment happen to be improving lately and non-farm payrolls are notoriously erratic. ADP employment on Wednesday was much better than predicted and the employment component of Friday's ISM non-manufacturing rose to 52.7 from 50.9 - the greatest since October 2007.

The overall status of the U.S. overall economy looks to be strengthening incrementally as well. We note that even an array of bearish economists have now ruled out a near-term double-dip.

The primary place of anxiety within the U.S. economy relates to fiscal policy. The U.S. debt commission's recommendations were shelved on Friday after it didn't get 14 of the 18 votes needed for it to head to Congress for argument and a vote. The plan, which involved boosting social security payments to sixty-nine and boosting the gasoline tax by 15-cents can now be altered or overlooked. The value in the report may have been in starting off a debate nevertheless its speedy denial in addition demonstrates U.S. political figures are reluctant to make the tough decisions that are important to forge a balanced budget.

The jobs statement demonstrated state and local governments laying off 11,000 workers. We appear to be at only the leading edge of a long-term cut in U.S. federal government spending which could cost up to a million jobs over the following few years. Surely in regards to the rate as well as harshness of those lay offs and job cuts will go a good way towards the U.S. dollar's near-term performance.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - The Battleground

By Owen Jones

If you are at all interested in either Pennsylvania or American history, you will certainly have heard of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the historic activities that took place there for the period of the American Civil War. The three day long battle that took place there in July 1863 was cruel and bloody, but was claimed as a victory for the Unionist North.

Even so, one quick look in the Union Army burial ground in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Cemetery Hill will persuade you that the victory came at a very high cost. The cost in human life and human suffering was gigantic on both sides. Later on in the same year, Abraham Lincoln gave a discourse which was to become famous throughout the world as the Gettysburg Address.

These days, the Gettysburg National Military Park is a tranquil place, but it acts as a moving reminder of the battle that was fought, the strategies employed, the heroism of the combatants and the readiness of military leaders to sacrifice the common soldier for political ends.

If you go to the Gettysburg National Military Park, you would do well to begin your trip in the visitors' centre. There you will be able to pick up books, pamphlets and leaflets to help you orientate yourself when you are on the battlefield, even if you are familiar with how and where the genuine battle was fought.

If you feel that it would be too much for you to work things out for yourself or if you do not have much time, you could join one of the regular guided tours. If you are somewhere in between these two positions, you could first watch a film in the Cycloarma Center, where there are also historical objects recovered from the theatre of war on the numerous excavations that have taken place over the nearly 150 years since the battle at Gettysburg took place. If you do not look around the museum before you go on to the battleground, you should look later.

If you are going to Gettysburg to enlighten your children about that most important era of American history, you should first check out the special interest programmes available to 7-12 year olds in the warmer summer months. One programme allows children to enlist in the army of 1863 for an hour in order to get a sense for what it was like for soldiers of the day and what it was like for the children that helped them go into battle.

Another programme consists of a story-teller telling stories of what it was like to be a youngster in the days of the Civil War and the role that kids played both in the war and in civilian life back then.

Gettysburg is a spellbinding place to go to whether your family was embroiled in the battle there or not. Many of the combatants' names and place names like Devil's Den and Cemetery Hill will already be familiar to you and a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park will bring them back to life for you.

The Christmas Truce of December 1914

By Rob Atherton

On the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, many assumed it would be finished by Xmas. Devoted teenage men were eager to enlist in the army as soon as possible as they presumed they would miss out on the action. Suffice to say, history has confirmed that their positive outlook was misdirected as the war would not end till 1918. The German progress was halted at the First Battle of Marne and the drive for the sea developed as the Allies and Germans both dug in. It was the commencement of the trench warfare of the Western Front.

The outcome was lines of trenches running from the North Sea to Switzerland along a 440 mile front. The battle lines moved hardly at all as a war of attrition broke out. Original trenches weren't well made and were vulnerable to cave in. Even by trench warfare standards, 1914 was pretty lousy. As winter approached, the men on the front line knew that the war would not be concluded by Xmas after all.

The Western Front ran through both Belgium and France with infantry from France, Belgium and United Kingdom manning a range of areas. In some positions, the German trenches were no more than 30 yards away. Being in such close proximity allowed the soldiers to call to their opponents or even display signs. On the German belt buckles was the inscription "Gott Mitt Uns" (God is with us). The British reply was "We've got mittens too". Some of the verbal exchanges were a bit more black humour. A volley of shots would bring the response "Missed" or "Right a bit".

Nonetheless, it was these exchanges that laid the foundations of a few extraordinary moments across the Western Front on 24th December 1914. The Germans celebrate Christmas on the 24th as opposed to UK and France who celebrate on the 25th). The weather had improved and on the 24th, the voices from the German trenches were completely different. They began singing carols and set Christmas Trees on their trenches. Troops began calling to each other and inevitably, some embarked into no mans land where they spoke and swapped cigarettes, food and souvenirs. Stories of the truce may differ greatly as there were actually quite a few truces up and down the lines. They were predominantly in the sectors manned by the British as the Germans were occupying Belgium and French land so the Christmas spirit was less in evidence amongst these troops.

The Xmas Truce of 1914 was not official but as many as 100,000 men were believed to have been involved. As well as fraternisation, the chance was also taken to recover and bury the dead. One of the most famous parts of the truce was the football match between the British and Germans. There are a number of inconsistant accounts concerning the game with a number of finals scores. This would suggest there were various games at different places.

The length of time the truce lasted also varied but generally, it was over on Xmas Day. Typically, hostilities started again by mutual understanding. In one case, on the morning of the 26th December 1914, Captain Stockwell of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers fired into the air and stood above the parapet. His opposite number in the German trench also stood up, they saluted and stepped down. Captain Stockwell heard the German fire a couple of shots into the air and World War I resumed. Of course, the Xmas Ceasefire was very much against the wishes of British commanders and in the subsequent years, artillery barrages were ordered for Christmas Eve.

In 2008, a plaque to the Christmas Truce on the Western Front was unveiled at the village on Frelinghen and was the 1st memorial to the incidents of Christmas 1914. The legacy the truce left behind is noteworthy with several books being penned and it was also the inspiration for many different songs.

The UK Climate and Solar Panels

By Terry B Jackson

When we look outside our windows and see nothing but unpredictable weather, it makes it hard to believe that solar panels would actually work in the UK. This popular misconception is completely false, and in fact solar panels can be used effectively in the UK, just as they are used abroad in other climates.

We all know we have a rather unpredictable climate, ranging from hot and bright to cold and dull, so it can obviously make people question the feasibility of solar power in the UK. But the UK actually gets 65% of the sun's rays that the equator experiences, which is not bad when we consider the equator is the hottest place in the world. Thankfully, the UK is at just the right angle to best harness the sun's rays, which solar photovoltaic (or PV) panels can then convert into enough electricity to power the average 3 bedroom house.

It is also a misconception that solar panels need constant sunlight to convert into electricity, but in fact, solar PV panels can still produce some electricity on cloudier days. And, should cloudy days come one-after-another, then you can store electricity on batteries from previously more sunny days so none is wasted. Any excess electricity produced can even be sold back to the grid via the Feed in Tariff, details of which you can find online.

We are all aware that fossil fuels are running out fast, and that something has to be done about ensuring we have a reliable source of power in the UK. Solar power is a popular choice because it generates energy pollution free, so we are not only able to generate our own power, but also able to reduce our home's energy carbon footprint by up to 90%.

We all know the sun provides Mother Nature with energy, but now the sun can provide us with electricity to power our homes. A completely pollution-free source of energy, solar PV panels are an easy way for us to invest in our planet for all the future generations to come.

The Disaster of Exercise Tiger

By Rob Atherton

Throughout the build up to the Allied invasion in Normandy in 1944, a terrific deal of preparation and organizing was required. Data was consistently being gained by a network of spies whilst materials and equipment were being brought to England. These would be vital all through and following what was and still is the largest invasion force ever assembled.

Preparation and practise was a significant part of the plans. Rangers who were to assault Point du Hoc properly trained by climbing cliffs and men made practice beach landings. An essential piece of the operation of secrecy and the locals of Great Britain were counted upon to play their part. In Devon, an area called Slapton Sands was picked as a good practice area due to the similarities with the Utah landing beach in Normandy.

Exercises for the landings started in late 1943 with the main invasion scheduled for June 1944. Over 3,000 residents were relocated from the local area around Slapton Sands. Many exercises were organised and one of the biggest was Operation Tiger involving roughly 30,000 men (approximately 33 % of the present strength of the British Army) were to be involved.

Exercise Tiger occurred in late April 1944. The first practice landings were carried out without any difficulties but throughout the exercise planned for the early hours of 28th April 1944, disaster struck. German E-Boats operating from Cherbourg intercepted a convoy of 8 LST (Landing ships). They aimed torpedoes at the LSTs and desperate men jumped into the freezing waters to get away the sinking ships. A good number of had not been taught how to put on their life vests and drowned.

In addition to the E-Boat attacks, more men died on the beaches themselves. The use of live ammunition had been authorised and in addition to the fatalities in the sea, there were further casualties by friendly fire as they strayed into the wrong sections of the beaches.

Overall in excess of 900 men were killed during Exercise Tiger and it was nearly forty years before the facts were made public. Ironically, only nearly 200 men died on Utah Beach during the real landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944. Today, a Sherman Tank is on display at Slapton Sands as a memorial to the men who died throughout Exercise Tiger.

Advice For Fishing With A Bow and Arrow

By Owen Jones

Archery fishing is also called bow fishing and it is as ancient as the bow and arrow themselves. We in the West tend to think that only poorer tribesmen in Third World countries go bow fishing, but that is not quite true.

These days the hunting of mammals is stringently controlled and so some people who like to hunt with a bow will switch to bow fishing if the animals that they like to pursue, say deer, are out of season. Some other people, who would not hunt a deer or bear are quite happy to kill fish in this fashion.

Bow fishing is a skillful sport, but the equipment need not necessarily be hi-tech. The fact is that you can use whatever bow you have or you can just make one. It does not have to be strong, because the quarry is seldom more than ten feet away. You categorically do not need a 100 lbf longbow to kill a trout.

Having said that, any bow used for fishing will need to be adapted slightly - you will need to attach a reel to it, but it does not have to be anything fancy. There are three principal types of reel for use in bow fishing: hand-wrap, spincast and retriever and the line is usually braided nylon of approximately eighty pounds although you might require six hundred pound breaking strain line for alligators or sharks.

It is worth checking out the regulations with regard to bow fishing in your country or state, because sometimes bow fishermen have to be licensed and sometimes getting that license involves having attended a safety course.

Some places will even have by-laws regarding the kind of equipment you can use in bow fishing and of course, some fish have seasonal limitations.

Bow fishing is a hybrid of fishing and hunting, so you could have to acquire some new skills like tying knots for instance. You will have to be able to tie the line to the reel and the arrow and those knots will have to be able to put up with the tremendous acceleration that an arrow leaving a bow goes through without failing.

The bow may not be different much from a standard bow, but the arrows certainly do. Arrows for bow fishing are usually a lot heavier that air-flight arrows. They also have barbed points to stop the fish escaping or just dropping off when you reel it in. The arrows do not have flights either because flights are apt to avert the true course of the arrow in water - the opposite of in the air.

There are three principal tactics used in bow fishing: 1] you can put down ground bait and lie in wait. - an over hanging branch or high boulder is good for this; 2] you can float down stream in a dinghy while sitting or standing in the bow; 3] you can walk into the river like a salmon fisherman.

Compensating for the refraction of the water is the most difficult ability to learn and that means knowing the water well as well.

The Martini Henry Rifle That Rescued The Men At Rorkes Drift

By Rob Atherton

The Battle of Rorkes Drift is without doubt one of the more well-known actions from the history belonging to the British Army. On 22 January 1879, just hours immediately after the Zulu victory at Isandlwana, approximately 4,000 Zulus assault the mission station at Rorkes Drift just along the Buffalo River in Natal.

With less than 140 men defending Rorkes Drift, you would be forgiven for guessing the soldiers had little prospect of survival, particularly taking into consideration what happened to their colleagues at Isandlwana. Nonetheless, together with in addition to being very courageous soldiers, the defenders of Rorkes Drift had a rifle that would give them an advantage over the Zulus. The weapon in question was the Martini Henry rifle.

The .45 calibre rifle was very effective at inflicting awful injuries and when fired at a range of under 200 yards, a round may well easily pass through a body and strike the man behind as well. The Martini Henry was a single shot, breech loading rifle and offered the British a major advantage over the Zulus who were basically armed with short stabbing spears (iklaws).

Although the Martini Henry was held responsible in part of the disaster at Isandlwana, if properly maintained, it was an excellent weapon. To single the rifle out for the defeat at Isandlwana is severe as there were many other factors that contributed towards the defeat.

At Rorkes Drift, the Martini Henry was essential for the British. As a store, there was a lot of ammo plus extra weapons plus the defensive area was a good deal more compact and so was less of a challenge to defend compared to the position at Isandlwana. Brought to the British Army in 1871, the Martini Henry could well fire up to 10 rounds a minute in the possession of a properly trained soldier. The rifle had a highly effective range of beyond 500m that resulted in providing the British could spot the Zulu warriors, they could possibly start killing them before they were close enough for hand to hand fighting.

Despite the tremendous odds at Rorkes Drift, the British only lost close to 10% of their strength while at the same time, the British buried roughly four hundred Zulus and it was viewed a comparable number would've later died of their wounds. The soldiers had beaten back the Zulu attack and were thankful to the Martini Henry rifle.

Manchester United Face Liverpool In FA Cup Round 3

By Tom Doerr

The globally renowned Manchester United are set to lose their veteran goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar as he pushes 40 years old. The Dutchman is considered one of the best keepers in the world and has won some of the toughest competitions in the world such as the Champions League and Premier League.

The teams last clashed in 2006 when Liverpool defeated United 1-0 in a match that was shadowed by the horrific broken leg injury of United's Alan Smith. New Liverpool gaffa Roy Hodgson says "It will be an excellent game of football and it's a bit unfortunate that two premier league teams of the quality of united and us get drawn in the third round, I always feel that's a bit sad."

The game will be the only tie in the draw which will face two premier league teams, something which many argue will damage the quality of the football later in the competition. The draw of the competition is designed to be fair and will not always work in any team's favour but an interesting moment came when Kasabian's Serge drew his favourite team Leicester and Oasis' Noel drew his hometown Manchester City out of the hat.

This will be the 9th time the two rivals have met since the war and United have taken the victory 7 times out of the 8 previous games so bookies will have their favourites. But Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is keeping his hopes up despite a string of humiliating defeats and the loss of skippers Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to injury.

Both have more experience than the 26-year old and have a more extensive record but officials at united have earmarked Lindegaard as "one for the future", hinting that he will remain a reserve keeper and have his talent nurtured for a later date.

Decontamination Showers and Eye Wash More Popular Due to Health and Safety Legislation

By Phyllis Fleming

The mass production of chemicals is directly linked to industry, as industry requires chemicals for cleaning and manufacturing. The UK Chemical Works Regulations were written in 1922 to protect those working with chemicals. More legislation has been passed since then, to the point that the UK has become a leader in the field of Health and Safety at Work. The bulk manufacture of these chemicals and the associated legislation, has led to an increase in requirement for decontamination showers and safety showers, emergency eyebaths and eye wash and face wash fountains.

At the forefront of the Health and Safety field are the UK and USA, two countries who have passed the majority of health and safety rules to help protect the workforce. The USA became a leader in the implementation of standards for this emergency equipment in 1981 thanks to the introduction of the American National Standard which now oversees the performance and maintenance of emergency equipment.

Due to the political involvement of unions in the 60s and 70s the number of legislations and recommendations around the workforce were high and the UK enforced the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974. The number of legislations being passed in the UK has been steady even today and companies that do not follow the rules face jail sentences and heavy fines.

India has recently adopted the Indian Standard which makes use of the content in the American Standard as other countries now start to catch up with the UK and USA. European countries have recently planned to create a European Standard that can be applied throughout the countries in the continent. The demand for emergency equipment will continue to rise as other countries begin the adopt legislation that increases the standards of health and safety throughout the chemicals industry.

Events such as these raise awareness in the international community of decontamination showers and safety showers, emergency eyebaths and eye wash and face wash fountains.

How East Germany Found Its Feet

By Henry Cooper

It has nearly been 20 years since the Berlin Wall came down. It was erected in 1961 and for nearly 30 years divided East Germany from West Germany. But it was more than this, it cut off East Germany from the Western world. For generations, East Germans were forced to swallow the Communist doctrine while the rest of the world moved forward.

Plainly there had been a huge cultural shock for East Germans when integration first occurred. There were numerous things they now had to become used to. Now virtually twenty years after, there isn't any East Germany but instead only 1 Germany and folk who once lived in East Germany are now changed to modern life.

You have some issues for Germans who were in their 20s and 30's when the wall come down. Things like drug and booze abuse were cryptic.
They found today's world too mad and couldn't get used to things. They reacted poorly and as a consequence had social issues.

Children are a lot more malleable and those who were 5-10 at the time had no problem adjusting. They went to school and then university and now have jobs. You have kids who used to live in East Germany and now own their own hi-tech companies. They have really had no problems getting use to the online age.

Some former East Germans realized they could put their skills to good use and make money from it Mainly from going to the casino and then the online casino. Some of the best players in the world are from behind what was the Iron Curtain. They are able to use their mathematical and deductive skills to good use.

Apropos sport, the previous East Germans were in a different league and folk were concerned that they'd get left behind once the wall came down but this has not been the case. Sportsmen from the previous East Germany have achieved success though not as successful as they were in the doped filled time of the 1960s and 1970s.

There wasn't any doubt that during this time methodical doping by the East German authorities were ready. Ladies did not look like ladies and as a consequence the East German groups achieved the most spectacular results. At the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games they won forty gold gongs and this was 47 4 years after in Moscow. They won 37 gold gongs at the 1988 Seoul Games which were the last Olympic Games they took part in.

Most of their medals came in the sports of athletics, swimming and rowing. It turned out that former Hitler Youth and Nazi Party member, Manfred Ewald was behind it all. He did it with Manfrd Hoeppner and these medals came at a price. Those who won paid the price with their bodies being affected by the side-affects of the doping. Many of them still require counseling and therapy.

Archery Targets

By Owen Jones

Archery can be classed as a sport or a hobby and it has its own category at the Olympic Games. Archers either hunt wild game animals or aim at targets or both. If you aim at targets in a competition, it is the aggregate score of all your arrows that is used to work out your position in that competition. The nearer the centre of the target that the arrow strikes, the higher the tally.

Target archery can also be sub-divided into two classes: field archery and target archery. In target archery, the archer stands in a preset spot. If there are several archers, they can stand in a row and all aim together on command from the person in charge of enforcing the rules and safety. Any type of bow can normally be used in target archery, although only compound bows may be used in the Olympic Games.

In field archery, the targets are of diverse sizes and are placed at different distances. The archer moves around the course, so there is no one fixed shooting spot. The targets may be the well-known round targets with concentric rings or they may be life-size models of wild animals like bears, moose and foxes.

The bows used in field archery are more often than not traditional type bows: longbows, flat bows and recurves, although archers are allowed to use any bow that they like. When stalking live animals, compound bows are usually used because they are smaller, so more manoeuvrable, yet they are still extremely powerful.

Archery targets are conventionally made from straw bundled and tied together to make ropes. These ropes of straw are then wrapped around themselves like a Catherine Wheel and stitched together. The cloth or paper target is pinned to the front of it.

The other word for these targets is 'butts' and many old towns and villages in Britain still have a recreational space called 'The Butts'. Nowadays they play football or cricket on it, but Henry VIII decreed that all males had to practice his archery skills every Sunday at the butts using a longbow, so that there would be a lavish source of archers for his army.

In competition archery, every archer shoots at his or her own target, but every archer is expected to have uniquely coloured flights, so that if there is a problem an archer and the arrow can be identified. This is useful for retrieving arrows that have missed the target altogether.

There are normally six arrows shot by each competitor in a series and if they are to be shot from different distances, it is usual to shoot from the furthest distance first. Men generally shoot from 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres, while ladies usually shoot from 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres.

Archery as a sport appears to be growing in popularity, especially as there is a tendency in some countries, like the UK, to make it more difficult to obtain a gun license. They say that fashion goes around and comes back again, well British men are back at the butts working on their archery skills again in greater numbers than there have been since possibly the sixteenth century.
