Organ Donations Could Be Saved By 'Opt-Out' System

By Tom Doerr

Experts predict that an extra 300 vital transplants per year could be carried out if people were asked to 'opt out' of donating rather than the current 'opt in' system. The existing system requires people to register their wishes for donation on the Organ Donor Register but it is fundamentally flawed as people are often willing donors but do not get round to joining the register.

If consent was presumed by default, it would force anyone unwilling to donate an organ to actively 'opt-out' and everybody else would be eligible for donation. It would then mean that the NHS would be able to transplant organs from the vast majority of the UK.

The public opinion is startlingly divided in the UK, with many people claiming that organ donation should be altruistic. However, the system is currently very successful in several EU countries. Currently in the UK, over 400 people each year die while on the organ waiting list, something that the NHS believes can only be helped by significantly increased donations.

According to Sheila Bird from the Medical research Council Biostatistics Unit in Cambridge, if a 'presumed consent' system had been in place for the last 10 years and 10% of people had opted out and another 10% of families' overruled donation, 2,880 extra organs would have still been available.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, Professor Bird said "Twenty years after the UK's first confidential audit, we continue to jeopardise substantial quality adjusted life years (uncounted by the Organ Donor Taskforce) for those awaiting transplantation by chasing a holy grail of enhanced consent by means other than presumption."

Professor Bird argues that presuming consent would ultimately cut costs, prolong life as well as saving bereaved families from anxious deliberation in deciding what happens to their loved ones organs. - 38623

Memories Of A Champion: Alexis Arguello

By Ross Everett

Alexis Arguello, one of the greatest boxers to ever compete, was found dead in his Managua, Nicaragua home in early July of an apparent suicide. He was 57 years old. Arguello was the mayor of Nicaragua's capital city at the time of his death.

Arguello is best known to fight fans for his epic battle in'82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Though Arguello would lose via knockout (amid some controversy due to an apparent mystery drink offered to Pryor by his trainer Panama Lewis) it was a thrilling toe to toe battle that even the most knowledgeable boxing experts remember fondly to this day. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:

"It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did."

Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport. Arguello never lost a fight at-0 pounds and would end his career with an astounding 82-8 record with 65 knockouts and championships in three different weight classes. At the time, he was only the sixth man in boxing history to hold title belts at three different weights.

Ironically, Arguellos career didn't get off to a good start and he lost his debut in'68 via first round TKO. After that, he seldom lost again. He was at his best against his toughest adversaries including Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. Bob Arum remembered him not only as a great fighter, but as a great man:

"Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter. He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person."

Arguello was also very quick to remind younger fighters on their responsibility to the sport and how champions should conduct themselves. Here's he speaks of his attitude toward his opponents:

"Of course after the fight you want to make sure that you're okay and so is the other guy, its a brotherhood in there, so you want to make sure everyone is okay after the war is over."

Arguello would frequently admonish boxers who didn't show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:

"When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud."

Most significantly, Arguello loved boxing and sought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:

"I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it."

While the modest Arguello would never say it himself, that was for from a one sided debt and he contributed more than his fair share to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness. - 38623

Wheelchair Access At Polling Stations 2010

By Clare Westwood

During this year's general election voting a wheelchair user had to be dragged up steps into a venue in order to be allowed to vote. There were no provisions made and even when it became apparent that disabled access was nonexistent polling staff made little effort to help.

Azheem Ditta, of Accrington, has told the story of how he was told that he could not vote due to there being no wheelchair access at his local polling station in a primary school in Accrington.

Mr Ditta claimed that officials refused to assist him after he was unable to enter the polling station via the large steps leading up to the door. There was no attempt to make the polling station wheelchair friendly.

The family of Mr Ditta then had to drag his wheelchair up the steps which caused his wife to slip and injure herself in the process. Mr Ditta was finally allowed to vote after they had struggled with his wheelchair in order to gain access into the building. Mr Ditta feels he is owed an apology for the 'disgusting' treatment he received.

This year's elections were marred by complaints and controversy with many people being refused and unable to vote before the 10pm poll station closing time.

One council spokesperson said of Mr Ditta's case, "When looking for polling stations we do try our best to identify buildings with disabled access. However, in one or two cases across the borough, this isn't always possible.

The fact that Mr Ditta could have been prevented from casting his vote if his family hadn't of physically carried him and his wheelchair into the polling station is bound to draw attention to the flaws in the current system.

A shake up of the whole voting process has been called for after numerous cases like Mr Ditta's and the people unable to vote due to stations closing caused public uproar. - 38623

Best Political Jokes -Capitol Steps Political Satire - Current Political Jokes

By James Scott

Intellectual midgets and Pee Wee Herman The Congressman; Hell will freeze over before politicians can fix this economy.

The economy is in shambles. Unemployment is at an all-time high. Foreclosure has become an epidemic and we are looking to the same screw-up's who put us in this mess to get us out.

Seriously, and I say this with all due respect the handicapped and economically disadvantaged, we would have a better chance of grabbing a random homeless, blind, deaf, mute, quadriplegic out of a refrigerator box shanty in a west Philly alleyway and betting one million dollars that we could train him to win the Ironman in a week, than we ever will depending on succubus congressmen and senators to get us out of this mess of which they are responsible.

Congress will blame this meltdown on aliens and the chupacabra before they admit any wrong doing.

Turn on the news and you'll see an orgy of sweaty brow, finger-wagging and jaw-flapping politicians blaming a straw man CEO of an investment banking firm for ten years of his firm's economic gluttony and purging (though he's only been in this executive position for 90 days). It's a set up. Wake up. It's all just a distraction.

Bring in a clean cut yet power hungry executive, put him through rapid promotion from VP to CEO, tell him he's going to a press conference then blindfold him, lead him to a 3x3 ft closet, toss in a dozen stink bombs, 10 day old soiled adult diapers, bottle rockets and fire crackers, turn out the lights, take off the blindfold, throw in a rabid squirrel, slam the door shut and 5 days later let him out to and ask him to run the Boston Marathon wearing an eye patch, Speedo and flip-flops while waving pompoms. Let's get real. We need solutions, not a congressional Kid n' Play dance competition. It's a joke and we are the ones being laughed at; you, me and our children.

I have an idea! For the next presidential election we can have Pee Wee Herman run under the democratic ticket, the hunchback of notre dame can run under the republican ticket and we can have Chubaka run the CNN televised debate and we can have the post debate commentaries by Lady Gaga and the Teletubbies and why not? Americans would complain for 2 days and then buy the latest Asterix Comic for voting advice on the next election. - 38623

Health Secretary Sets Out NHS Spending

By Tom Doerr

The new Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has announced that NHS spending will increase in real terms but warned that to do so, extensive efficiency warnings were key. He explained how Labour's vast increase in health spending over their last decade in office was "not sustainable for the future". Some questioned how the coalition of parties with opposing views on health would affect the big question of spending but the Liberal Democrats have accepted a Conservative "ring-fence" to guarantee real-term increases in keeping with inflation.

During the election campaign, Vince Cable, now Business Secretary criticised the plan saying it would require deeper cuts elsewhere in Whitehall. On BBC Radio 4, Secretary Lansey declared that the Lib Dems had agreed the need for real term increases but acknowledged that it will impact upon other departments.

"We have come together as two parties, each with our own mandate from the General Election, but in order to secure the national interest," said Lansley. Although parliament has immediate plans to begin to cut the deficit and deal with the debt crisis, during the campaign the Conservative Party were very clear that they would not let the sick pay for Labour's debt crisis by making cuts to the National Health Service.

The Lib-Con government has planned to safeguard the NHS by ensuring that resources and spending are increased each year in real terms, but Lansey warned that just by protecting the real level of spending in relation to the level of inflation in the UK economy, it will not protect the NHS from the need to secure efficiency savings and to control pay and prices in the NHS.

The sustainable plan for the NHS is to deliver efficiency savings in the same way as the rest of the public sector. Due to the nature of the NHS, Lansley believes if they can secure efficiency savings they can reinvest that money into the NHS to deliver an improving service. Lansley finished by acknowledging that although this spending plan will affect other areas, it is unsustainable to cut the real value of the NHS budget - 38623

Help Drew Carey support cancer

This is something I normally don't do. I want to ask all of my readers to consider this. I read this post on the Slightly Drunk blog: http://slightlydrunk.blogspot.com/2009/10/cleveland-rocks.html There is a cancer survivor out there whose name is Drew Olanoff. He uses the twitter name @drew. He decided to auction off this name to raise money for cancer research, specifically the LiveStrong foundation, which is affiliated with the Lance Armstrong foundation. One of the bidders is Drew Carey (The Price Is Right, The Drew Carey Show). Drew Carey bid $100,000 for this name, but he has a challenge associated with it. If he can get 1,000,000 followers on Twitter by the end of this year, he will increase the amount to $1,000,000. I am asking everyone to follow Drew Carey on Twitter. Everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer. This is something you can do for a great charity, and all it will cost you is a couple of minutes. Post a comment here when you have done this and it will be a follow comment so you get a free backlink at the same time. Again, here is the link to the original article: http://slightlydrunk.blogspot.com/2009/10/cleveland-rocks.html or just follow Drew here: http://twitter.com/DrewFromTV/ Thank You, Jim Clary
