Know The 2010 Political Predictions

By Aaron Morgan

2010 will be a hard year for politicians all over the world. Hard times make for low approval ratings, especially for incumbent politicians, who usually get the blame for everything that is going on, even if the current troubles are largely the fault of their predecessors. Elections across the globe will continue to see the same trend as those held in 2009, with the politicians and parties that are in power before the elections suffering losses, and perhaps even losing their power completely. There has been a serious drop in the trust and respect held by the people for their politicians in many countries, partly due to the economic crisis, and this is likely to continue in 2010. Many voters are likely to feel more apathetic, with disillusion against the entire political system becoming a more significant factor in many elections than a desire for change or to see a particular party in office.

In the US, incumbent politicians of both parties are likely to suffer from decreased popularity, however, it is going to be much harder to gather support than it was during 2008's presidential elections, when there was such a great drive for change.

This could have a significant impact on the US 2010 midterms, which are to be held on Tuesday November 2nd. During this election, all of the 435 seats in the House of Representative are to be contested, along with 36 of the 100 Senate seats. There will also be elections for governorships in 38 states and a number of other state and local elections.

It seems likely that the Republicans will see their party gaining some seats in the House of Representatives, and possibly even becoming strong enough to take back control of the House. Many of the seats that are likely to change hands are currently Democratic. The strength of the predicted Republican gains might only be very moderate, however, and in order to wrest control of the House from the democrats, they would have to work against the current Democrat standing that has 39 more seats that is necessary to control the House of Representatives.

There have only been two cases in which, in the first midterm of their presidencies, more than 39 seats were lost to the election: in 1994 under President Clinton and in 1946 under President Truman. It is perfectly possible for the Democrats to lose control of the House in 2010, but it is perhaps equally likely that, despite their losses, they manage to just about keep control. There is still time for either party to strengthen their hold on the electorate. - 38623

The Matter Of DWI And DUI Holds A Lot Of Myths Which Are Simply False

By Bill Rogers

It is simply dangerous to drive a vehicle if intoxicated. Studies expose that the vast majority of people in the country believe drunk driving to be one of the nation's most critical social challenges, more significant than health care-related issues, homelessness, racism, and education. Most people in the US find impaired driving by others as a main danger to themselves and their loved ones.

The percentage of auto mishaps attributable to drinking is in reality not known. Alcohol-related collisions contain accidents that are clearly not caused by alcoholic beverages; as, for example, when a driver who has been drinking is sitting at a red light and rear-ended by a sober but negligent driver.

At one time, over twenty-five percent of fatally injured motorists had BACs of at least .10. Certainly, drinking was not a cause of some unknown quantity of these tragedies.

Only one fatality caused by alcohol consumption is one too many. Each and every such fatality is a pointless catastrophe that forever traumatizes numerous others.

The topic of DWI and DUI includes a lot myths which are simply incorrect.

Sucking on pennies will lower your BAC level. False: Sucking on pennies or other copper has no impact on alcohol breath tester BAC results.

Hypoglycemia brings about acetone in the breath, which the Breathalyzer will record as alcohol on the breath. True: Regrettably, about one of seven drivers is diabetic and at an increased risk of false arrest and conviction for DUI/DWI.

Field sobriety assessments, being based on scientific principles, perfectly identify drunk drivers. False: A study showing police videotapes of individuals undergoing common field sobriety tests, and asking them to choose whether suspects were too inebriated to drive legally, reported inaccurately 46% of the time. The use of field sobriety tests generated judgments by law enforcement officers that were about as correct as a coin flip.

In the event you believe you have been wrongfully charged with a DWI offense, it is definitely worth consulting with a legal professional who deals with DUI defense near you. - 38623

Historical Overview Of The Creation Of An Old Tax In The United Kingdom

By Tayyab Khan

In order to explore the historical facts about an old taxation system on windows in the United Kingdom, read on. The window tax was a tax which was introduced into the United Kingdom in the late 17th century by King William the third. He was finding it hard to find a way to tax people based on their income or wealth because many people refused to tell the king how much they earned. They felt it was a completely private matter and certainly no business of the King.

Of his subjects, the King decided that the most fair method of taxation would be by looking at the size of people's houses. Each person who owned a house would have to pay a fixed fee of 2 shillings. This is about 10 pence in the new system. As well as this, if the house was large and contained more than 10 windows, there were extra taxes to pay.

If the house had between ten and twenty windows, then this extra tax was 4 shillings and anything over twenty windows had to pay eight shillings. Later, as the king wanted to increase the tax, he reduced the minimum number of windows to be taxed from ten to seven. This was further changed in 1825 to eight windows.

Poor subjects who were eligible for the church's charity could claim an exemption. This was irrespective of the number of windows their dwelling contained.

In order to evade this tax, residents resorted to bricking up extra windows. This occurred mainly in the 17th and early 18th centuries. In Scotland, this tax was not introduced until the 1780s by William Pitt the Younger. Even here, residents painted over their windows black with white crosses. These became known as Pitt's pictures. A visitor to Charlotte's Square in Edinburgh can still see these windows on some of the houses.

It may be possible that in contrast to this, many of the richer families actually had extra windows designed into their houses. They commissioned properties with as many windows as possible. Even blank walls had window facades to create the look of more windows. - 38623

A Decade Of Teens Going Jobless

By Larry Wetter

This economy is obviously wreaking havoc with people's lives. Jobs are so hard to find that many people are just giving up. It doesn't seem to matter who you are or what you do, most likely your job is at risk. This has been going on now for a couple of years and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight.

People don't understand that when something like this occurs, it will possibly affect life for an extended time. One of many hardest hit groups that want jobs is teens. A lot of them are searching for go to work for the first time and many of them are striking out. The teenage years are important improvement years and that features the coaching they obtain from their first job opportunities.

Teens probably don't need work as much as older people who have families but it is still important for them. Teenagers need those first jobs to put on their resumes and it is vital for them to get their feet wet in the real world. Jobs don't just provide money but they also teach responsibility and how to deal with other people.

Everyone has to get their first job sometime but the earlier you get one and the more jobs you have early on help you later in life. If we go 5 or 10 years with many teens never having a job, how is that going to affect their performance later on when they finally get one? Are they going to know how to deal with co-workers and management?

Right now we may potentially have a generation of young workers who will never learn proper job skills. This will hurt them and the employers who ultimately hire them. Their lives will be impacted as they struggle to make up the ground they lost early on when they should have been working but were unable to get hired anywhere.

We hear on the news regularly how awful it out there for people looking for work but we hardly ever hear analysis on how it's going to affect our country down the road. What's bad right now might have costs much later on that few of us realize. It looks as if the complex times are right here to stay. - 38623

Tips On Care Packages For Military Overseas

By Danny Newton

Sending military care packages overseas to our friends and loved ones doesn't have to be difficult. Often, I'm asked for military care package ideas. So I thought that I'd put just a few of the very best tips together for sending support to our soldiers overseas.

Remember to write a letter. Your letter or card doesn't need to be four pages or say something awe-inspiring. Just a note will do. While stationed overseas, even the simple routines back here at home are nice to read about. If you have trouble writing, or get stuck on your note, try keeping a journal. Write a few lines to your soldier now and then when you think of him or her. You can even date the pages to share your days with your loved one. It won't take long to amass quite a bit to send and your soldier will be able to see how often she or he is in your thoughts.

Next, figuring out what to put in a military care package doesn't have to give you a headache. You don't have to figure out the perfect gift. If you're only going to send a single package while your soldier's deployed, put some thought into it. But wouldn't it be better to send smaller, more common items more often? It'll be a lot easier to fill the package if you know that you'll be sending another in a week or two with the things you might have forgotten. If your soldier has a taste for jelly beans and peppermints, make a package out of that. Next week, you'll come across something else for him or her. Uncle Sam isn't going to let our men and women go hungry - so we're trying to find little "extras" to show our support. Its not Christmas, that only comes around once a year - we're just trying to send something to let them know we're thinking of them and maybe tastes good too.

Stay away from items that are issued by the military. Things like socks and underwear are taken care of in most cases. If you're unsure, ask your soldier what he or she might need. Its very possible that there's more sunscreen than they need at a certain base, so ask about things like that. Also, if you can contact them, ask what types of entertainment they have at the base. Find out if there's a DVD player there, or even video game. New release movies are always popular but make sure they can watch them first and never send an "adult only" stuff overseas.

Lastly, if your daily routine becomes too busy and you don't have time to shop for all the items and mail a package yourself, search for military care package websites where you'll find a wonderful selection of military care packages to choose from and customize. They'll send the package, along with a handwritten card directly overseas to an APO or FPO address for you. It only takes minutes and is a simple way to show your love and support.

It's imperative that we show support for our nation's men and women who are stationed overseas. For those of us with friends and family members currently deployed, its essential. We should all remember the importance of showing our support for the troops. - 38623

The U.S. Government's Irresponsible Spending Has To Stop

By Scott Johnson

It has been one whole year since the 2009 stimulus bill was passed and it is still in the news almost every day. Many people still don't fully understand that that bill was meant to give money to businesses as well as state and local governments and not individual people.

The stimulus bill did create some new jobs and perhaps that was the best way to have benefited from it. There was also some aid to people who needed mortgage assistance but that was hard to qualify for. People continue to look for grants from the government hoping to find new ones that came about from the stimulus but there just aren't any.

Unfortunately, people fortunes have not gotten better from the bill. Today there is still high unemployment and jobs continue to be extremely hard to find. When you think about our economic troubles today, one might wonder if we got anything at all from that 787 billion dollar bill?

Whenever there is news about the government passing legislation of that size, there are many people who think the government is just handing out money. They could be remembering the stimulus check that many people got during President Bush's last term and hoping there will be another windfall like that coming in the mail. That stimulus was meant to spur on the economy and the most recent stimulus bill was meant to try to save the economy.

People should know that there never has been anything that is really free money, as it has to be paid for in some way. It is too bad more people don't pay taxes so that they can understand and feel the pain when taxes are raised. If higher taxes impacted everyone, more people would be opposed to them and maybe politicians would think twice before throwing away our tax dollars. - 38623

British Soccer Legend Robson Dead At 75

By Ross Everett

One of England's most beloved sporting figures, Sir Bobby Robson, yielded to his courageous fight with cancer recently at the age of 75. Even the often critical British press had nothing bad to say about the universally respected Robson, headlining their obituaries with adjectives like The Bravest Knight or simply The Legend.

Robson enjoyed a productive career as a player that spanned 20 years and was spent primarily in the English Premier League with Fulham and West Bromwich Albion. He also earned twenty 'caps' in International play for England, scoring four goals.

After his retirement in'68 as an active player, he found more fame as a team manager both in England and on the international level. In the EPL, his guidance transformed Ipswich Town from a laughing stock to a league powerhouse and he would lead the club for well over a decade. He would also serve as the England National Team manager for 8 years, as well as managing club teams in Portugal and Spain. He ended his career in British football with a stint as manager of Newcastle United that ended in 2004.

Robson earned even more love and admiration from his countrymen due to his public battle with cancer. Although a brain tumor left him partially paralyzed in 2006, he never wavered in his commitment to English football or to raising money and awareness for cancer treatment. After being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2007, he dedicated the rest of his life to helping others with the same diagnosis. He started the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and raised well over one million pounds for the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre in Newcastle.

Even two men who seldom see eye to eye on anything--Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson--were in agreement on Robson's greatness:

"I wanted to and I will keep with me always the Bobby Robson of every day, a person who had extraordinary passion for life and for football, with an extraordinary enthusiasm. Bobby Robson is one of those people who never die, not so much for what he did in his career, for one victory more or less, but for what he knew to give to those who had, like me, the good fortune to know him and walk by his side. My thoughts and embraces go to all his loved ones."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson shared these touching comments:

"In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above him. I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice, which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I'm sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed."

"His character was hewn out of the coalface; developed by the County Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which he passed on to his sons. The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems."

"The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let's hope it won't be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them."

Many EPL clubs will honor Robson in some form or another during the upcoming season with a number of more lasting tributes planned. Several statues and other permanent forms of remembrance are reportedly under consideration. - 38623
