Cargo Screening: Providing Cargo Safety

By Lola Francis

It is very important that imports and exports go through the proper cargo screening before leaving or entering any country. The most vulnerable continents that are in great need to have proper screening is probably Europe and North America.

The shipments must be checked very well to increase the peoples safety. If any cargo checked is doubtful it needs to be immediately reported to the different authority's and if done this will save lives. The great importance of screening methods should not be taken lightly.

Many different things have changed since the terrorist attacks started several years back and this means that screening is more important today than it was yesterday. The facts are that terrorist are always trying to find new and improved ways to kill people by sending bombs and other materials through different shipments.

An international law called the safe port act, which is an industry standard and has made changes to this law frequently over the years has many guidelines for screening shipments internationally. The laws have been made much more strict since the 9/11 attacks on the United States of America and the railways attacked in Europe. The hunt for Osama Bin Laden continues and terrorist recruiting by AL Qaeda is increasing, which means many countries are still in grave danger.

Even Passenger based companies must look at items before they can let them on board whether it is air or sea. This screening is something that will not decrease in the future and will probably increase more. People can only bring certain items on board planes and must use a checklist to decrease the chances of an attack.

There are many different techniques for finding dangerous or illegal items and the x-ray machine is quickly becoming a standard. An x-ray machine is able to look through an item to see what is inside the packages before they are loaded on board and this is a widely trusted methods used today. The dog is the oldest available screening method today and these highly trained dogs can sniff out just about anything dangerous with the nose. Last but not least is the highly trained security personal that can visually look to find anything strange or out of place.

The cargo screening is increasing for many safety reasons and will hopefully continue to keep people safe all around the world. The dangers that are found in shipments can mean the difference between life and death.
