When you think of being #1, you usually think of the undefeated season or the hard fought victory, but you rarely think about being the #1 failure. That is however, exactly what Arizona's budget is. Arizona is said to have the worst budget and the biggest budget problems in the United States.
It's no secret everyone from the US government to Joe the Plummer has been hit hard by the States economic woes, dating back to early 2007. Yet some states, including Arizona have been hit the hardest. Lots of states are facing severe budget problems, but only Arizona can say that its problems are the biggest.
Arizona faces a budget deficit representing 24.2 percent of its general fund, easily outpacing every other state in the union and leaving No. 2 New York four percent behind. Conservative Republican David Smith is who is running for Arizona Legislative District 7 says: "The current budget deficit is over $300 million, and it could reach $700 million or more if prop 301 and 302 ballot measures do not pass this November."
AZ has lost around 340,000 jobs since mid 2007. Thousands of state workers have been laid off and thousands more have been required to take unpaid time off. Arizona has its largest unemployment rate in over 20 years at just under 10% and Arizona has cut the budget in several places. Arizona is also one of only a few states have tapped their so called rainy-day funds.
Arizonans have endured billions in budget cuts and next year's budget shortfall probably will top $1 billion due to stimulus money no longer supporting state programs because economists say Arizona's full recovery from the recession is still a few years away.
What this mean? It means we need to pay attention and elect a strong leadership core at the capital. With November elections for House of Representatives coming up, it's important to pay attention to candidates and what their experience levels are. Conservative Republican David Smith is the favorite with is past legislative experience and his 30 years as an Arizonan and attorney at law in the Phoenix metro area.
