Some Things You Should Avoid Broaching On A First Date

By Kevin Graham

It has been proven over the years that some conversation topics fare better than others when on a first date. If you are getting ready for a date and want to avoid making a blunder, here are three topics you should definitely avoid.

Try not to talk too much about yourself. It is the first date! Try to find out more about the other person. You will look arrogant and unattractive if you go on and on about yourself. Few things are worse than giving off the impression that you are pompous and cocky on a first date.

But if your date asks you a question about yourself, don't avoid it! It can make you seem guarded and make you look like you have something to hide, which isn't a good thing. Be open and answer all questions with honesty. Then, in turn, respond with a question of your own. This helps keep the conversation going.

Politics can be a dicey topic in any social setting, so it is only logical to avoid it on the first date.

It happens to come up, and you find that both of you share political viewpoints, then feel free to get into it a little bit and use it as a platform to start another topic. But if you sense an argument approaching, slam the brakes and change directions.

If you get the feeling that the two of you have differing views on politics, be sure to put off that conversation for a while.

The topic of religion tends to have the same rules as talking about politics. It generally isn't something you want to discuss on a first date.

Unless you are both of the same religion and completely agree on everything, don't get into such a heavy topic. Very little good can come of it.

Differing religious views can make a date go downhill. Unless is extremely important for you to know someone's religious viewpoints before getting involved with them, steer clear of this hazardous subject and save it for a later date.
