A Guide To Self Sufficient Living

By Trudy Edwards

Self sufficient living implies getting your requirements like food, clothing and shelter, by yourself. The idea of this type of living is very attractive because of rising costs nowadays. Everything seems to cost more and the supplies have diminished.

This lifestyle will be less taxing on natural resources and this will benefit our environment. Choosing this way of life is easy if you happen to live on a farm. There will be sufficient land and you will have natural resources available to you.

If you live on a farm there are many opportunities that are available to you. You could start cultivating a vegetable garden. Start growing fruit and sell the extra produce. If possible, you could increase the fruit growing process and start a fruit export business. Buy chickens and also other poultry so that you get eggs and meat. Start a business by selling the eggs and the poultry and also the vegetables from your garden.

You can start a nursery business on your land. Use all the leaves from your plantations and the garden as fertilizer. If there is a cow on your land, the use of dung for bio-fuel will save you a lot of money on electricity as well as gas.

It is not only those who live on farms who can choose this lifestyle. If you live in the city, you can also start doing this, but on a much smaller scale. Install solar energy to provide your household with all its energy requirements. You can build a barrel in order to trap rain water for irrigation use.

Grow your own herbs and vegetables. You can do this even if you live in an apartment. Use the area that you have on a balcony or use your windowsills for pot plants. Save petrol by walking or cycling to work or to go shopping. Learn to sew and repair clothing items. Learn to knit jerseys as well as bedding. Install sky lights in your home to enable more light to enter your house. You will get natural light into your house all day and it will also allow heat into the house. Make sure that you recycle as many items as you possibly can.

It may not be easy to do this at first as people have been spoilt by being able to get a third party to do everything for them. Start small and build up to the point where you feel that you are adequately self-sufficient. The decrease in wastage and minimal usage of natural resources should spur you on.
