Useful Survival Skills Everyone Must Be Aware Of

By Jill Roberts

Survival abilities are what individuals need to develop if they need to deal with disasters for an indefinite period. In general, you need survival skills to keep enduring when your life is threatened. This means you must know how to forage for food, construct a shelter and keep yourself nourished during a crisis situation. If you think you have more to learn about survival, here's a simple survival guide.

Developing survival skills also entails keeping a level head during dire situations, discover how to signal for help, steer safely across an unfamiliar terrain and keep away from unpleasant interactions with animals and poisonous plants. Some individuals are inherent survivors, especially if they have a background related to survival. Some require a lot of training in order to pick up survival abilities. Survival depends on your ability to prepare for any kind of crisis.

Three Essentials of Survival

1. Learning How to Create a Survival Kit

Insight and an eye for detail are needed in order to assemble a good survival kit. This is the kit you grab when you need to evacuate at once. It is suggested that every member of your family has a bag ready. Add in food rations, a bottle of water, neon-colored clothing, rainproof matches, batteries and pieces of garments to keep one from freezing.

Use impermeable material for your bag and for storing your provisions. These items will be useful if you are forced to walk in the rain.

2. Physical Well-Being

You often hear individuals say that they become three times stronger during disasters. Adrenaline is produced by the body in plentiful amounts when you are forced to manage traumatic situations. It's the human body's automatic response to crisis situations. But this adrenaline rush does not last long. If you want to be able to keep up your strength to help yourself, your family and other people during a crisis situation, you should do physical training exercises.

Enhance your strength by exercising regularly and making sure you do resistance training with a pro. There is no substitute for sheer strength when someone needs to be hoisted up or if you need to lug another person's load for the duration of an evacuation.

3. The Basics of Map-reading

You don't need to learn the map of your city by heart, but you must know the rudiments of using a map and a compass. You know how some people claim to be hopeless with directions? That kind of rationale won't fly if you're in an emergency situation. When there's a crisis, everything you do can affect the welfare of your family, and this includes going to the evacuation site. If you learn the basics of navigating a terrain, you will also be able to stay away from booby traps. Remember that during a crisis situation, you should be able to get from one point to another safely, and as fast as possible.
